This is a six-month post to provide maternity cover for one of two established Physicians Associate posts within the Liver team. The successful candidate will work to support the medical and surgical teams in all areas of care delivery including inpatient care on ward 8, the care of acute and planned admissions. This post has not replaced a doctor post, it was a new post that was created to support the medical and surgical teams within the hepatology unit

The Paediatric Liver Unit at BWC comprises a multi-disciplinary team, which provides a supra-regional service for children with liver disease, acute liver failure and liver and small bowel transplantation and a range of hepato-biliary surgical disorders.  

The Unit is based on Ward 8 and has 15 beds including a 6 bedded high dependency unit, 6 isolation cubicles, one dedicated elective surgical bed, one dedicated small bowel transplant assessment bed and two rapid through-put low dependency beds for elective admissions.  

The unit works closely with both the transplant service at the University Hospital of Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust including transition clinics as well as other departments within BWC.

The philosophy of the Liver Unit is to provide family centred care for children and their families. There is a strong multi-disciplinary Team to support this philosophy. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected: 

To work closely to support the medical and surgical post graduate doctor team.

·       To contribute to achieving and maintaining any targets related to patients under       their care.  

·       To contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.  

·       To support work related to national audits. 

·     To be an active participant in the development of the speciality through the Trust. 

The post holder will be supervised by the duty consultant and an educational supervisor to oversee career development.

Clinical

·    To support the medical and surgical teams to manage a caseload of specific speciality patientsThis will include taking medical histories, undertaking physical examinations,, undertaking other clinical practical tasks e.g. phlebotomy, cannulation, and small bowel stoma biopsy. 

·   Duties will include supporting medical and surgical teams to manage children with all forms of liver disease, the peri-operative care of children undergoing endoscopy, liver biopsy, hepatobiliary surgery and transplantation (including liver, intestine and multivisceral). 

·  To develop  specialist knowledge and experience in the speciality, acting as a resource to the clinical team and allied health professionals.
