Applications are invited for two Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs) to join the Haematology and Transfusion laboratories (Blood Sciences) within Pathology at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. One post will be working at the at the Birmingham Women’s Hospital site and one at Birmingham Children’s Hospital site.

You must be able to demonstrate the values that are important to us – a friendly approachable personality; the ability to work well on your own and whilst under pressure; communicating well; working supportively with colleagues and demonstrating team working skills; focusing on delivering a quality service and treating others with respect and dignity. Good literacy, numeracy, organisational skills, alongside a confidence in the use of information technology (IT) are essential requirements. Applicants must have an ability to prioritise, and to work flexibly as well as having a keen eye for detail and a willingness to help.

Experience of working in a medical laboratory environment would be advantageous but is not essential as full training in the use of the appropriate equipment and computer systems will be provided.

The successful applicant will be the first point of contact for Trust staff delivering Pathology samples to the department or answering telephone enquiries from external service users, so a professional, pleasant and helpful attitude is required. Your role will be varied, including the receipt, sorting and preparation of patient’s blood samples, reagent validation, temperature monitoring, blood transfusion product handling and the routine maintenance of automated equipment.
