This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified nurse with experience of working with eating disorder patients and their families to work as part of the Forward Thinking Birmingham community Specialist Eating Disorders Service (SEDS). 

SEDS provide specialist assessment, intervention and evidence-based treatment for patients 0-25 with eating disorders in the community, alongside supporting their families/carers. The team also supports patients intensively in the community and in their own homes, to reduce inpatient admissions and facilitate safe early discharge.

The post holder will be required to have a high level of communication skills, both written and verbal, be compassionate, respectful and value individual patient needs. They will have the ability to recognise and manage challenging situations in a calm and professional manner (this may be clinic based or in the home), be resilient and emotionally intelligent and engage positively with children, young adults and families.  An excellent working knowledge of child protection and adult safeguarding issues for the age range 0-25 is essential.

SEDS are an established and ambitious team who are keen to drive forward service improvements through research in our specialist area. This includes working in collaboration with SLaM to become part of a group of spoke sites within the FREED network service, research and innovation scheme. 

Main duties of the job

Role Responsibilities:

• provide comprehensive assessment of mental, physical and psychosocial needs of patients with eating disorders and mental health comorbidities
• manage and take responsibility for a defined caseload of patients
• contribute to the ED Duty rota, providing telephone triage and risk screening for potential ED referrals received through FTB Referral Management Centre (RMC). Ensuring that patients are seen within NHSE waiting times standards, and risks are managed accordingly.
• undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual patients 
• provide support and guidance regarding eating disorder interventions, such as managing meal times, meal support for young people/adults, exercise/activity levels and brief therapeutic ED focused treatment
• physical health assessment and monitoring for patients under the eating disorder service
• provide psycho-education to the patient's family regarding eating disorder signs and symptoms, potential physical health risks and interventions
