Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified nurse with experience of working with eating disorder patients and their families to work as part of the Forward Thinking Birmingham community Specialist Eating Disorders Service (SEDS). 

SEDS provide specialist assessment, intervention and evidence-based treatment for patients 0-25 with eating disorders in the community, alongside supporting their families/carers. The team also supports patients intensively in the community and in their own homes, to reduce inpatient admissions and facilitate safe early discharge.

The post holder will be required to have a high level of communication skills, both written and verbal, be compassionate, respectful and value individual patient needs. They will have the ability to recognise and manage challenging situations in a calm and professional manner (this may be clinic based or in the home), be resilient and emotionally intelligent and engage positively with children, young adults and families.  An excellent working knowledge of child protection and adult safeguarding issues for the age range 0-25 is essential.

SEDS are an established and ambitious team who are keen to drive forward service improvements through research in our specialist area. This includes working in collaboration with SLaM to become part of a group of spoke sites within the FREED network service, research and innovation scheme. 

Main duties of the job

Role Responsibilities:

  • provide comprehensive assessment of mental, physical and psychosocial needs of patients with eating disorders and mental health comorbidities
  • manage and take responsibility for a defined caseload of patients
  • contribute to the ED Duty rota, providing telephone triage and risk screening for potential ED referrals received through FTB Referral Management Centre (RMC). Ensuring that patients are seen within NHSE waiting times standards, and risks are managed accordingly.
  • undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual patients 
  • provide support and guidance regarding eating disorder interventions, such as managing meal times, meal support for young people/adults, exercise/activity levels and brief therapeutic ED focused treatment
  • physical health assessment and monitoring for patients under the eating disorder service
  • provide psycho-education to the patient's family regarding eating disorder signs and symptoms, potential physical health risks and interventions

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional Qualification in Nursing e.g RMN, RSCN, RNLD
  • Relevant Post qualifying qualification e.g. or be able to demonstrate an equivalent level of training
Desirable criteria
  • Specific qualification in a relevant therapeutic speciality e.g. Eating disorders, CBTE, counselling, Family Therapy, IYAPT, substance misuse
  • Nurse Prescriber
  • Relevant Post graduate study or be able to demonstrate further skills based training

Skills and abilities

Essential criteria
  • High level of communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Excellent organisational skills, ability to manage own time and plan activities for young people/parents/carers
  • Ability to engage positively with children young adults and their families
  • Ability to confidently identify risk and take appropriate action
  • Ability to give and receive sensitive or contentious information and to act empathetically, tactfully and confidentially.
  • Ability to challenge poor behaviour
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and awareness of local communities and services within Birmingham
  • Excellent IT skills

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A good knowledge of own professional guidelines
  • Good knowledge and understanding of recognised disorders and illnesses in the field of mental health
  • Hold a specialist interest in eating disorder treatment and models, and can evidence this
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Mental Health Act

  • Able to work flexible hours across the week (7 days) to meet the needs of the service
  • Able to travel across the city to meet the commitments of the post, and has access to a car and business insurance daily for work purposes.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial post registration nursing experience in mental health care
  • Experience of working with young people or young adults with eating disorders in a community or acute setting
  • Experience of physical health monitoring, and physical health complexities associated with eating disorders
  • Use of therapeutic interventions with children and young adults i.e. 1:1, counselling, family therapy and group work
  • Delivering teaching / training
Desirable criteria
  • Developing a specialist area on behalf of the Service/ or local Team
  • Supervising less experienced members of staff
  • Experience of managing complex physical health needs
