Job overview

The post holder will work closely with the Maternity Risk and Governance Lead to develop and facilitate implementation of the Maternity Risk Management Strategy and provide specialist risk management advice to staff within the maternity directorate. 

They will be responsible for; the on-going monitoring of the maternity risk register, monitoring and investigating local and serious incidents; using root cause analysis where appropriate. They will be proactive in their approach to risk prevention and will help to encourage an open and transparent reporting culture that enables the organisation to learn lessons and prevent incidents from reoccurring. It is expected the post holder will work clinically on a regular basis to maintain clinical credibility. 

To deputize for the Maternity Risk/Governance Lead in their absence or as appropriate.

Essential criteria
  • NMC registered midwife post registration experience including recent clinical experience
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of post registration professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Specialist knowledge of quality and patient safety issues acquired through training/experience.

Knowledge & Nature of Experience

Essential criteria
  • Working in a variety of settings utilising all midwifery skills
  • Facilitating change management and innovation

  • Experience of risk assessment
  • Recent experience as a senior midwife
  • Use of Datix Risk Management System
  • Experience of investigating incidents
  • Experience of designing and delivering training
  • Statistical analysis and presentation of complex information

  • Ability to rapidly assimilate a range of complex (often clinical) information and make expert judgements.
  • Has a non-judgemental and fair approach to investigating incidents and complaints

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of current NHS strategy relating to patient safety
  • Knowledge of NMC Midwives Rules & Standards

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office application
  • Excellent written, communication and verbal skills, including presenting
  • Excellent organisational skills, including high level of accuracy and ability to work to tight deadlines
