Job overview

The successful post holder will be appointed to Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry on a whole time or maximum part time basis, and under the employment of the Birmingham Womens and Children’s Hospital NHS Trust.

This is a new post which has recently been approved by Birmingham and Solihull ICB commissioners, to meet the NHS England Standard Paediatric Congenital Heart Disease Specification May 2016.

The successful post holder will be expected to support the initiation and delivery of the provision of dental screening for children with a high risk of endocarditis undergoing cardiac surgery. You will deliver this service collaboratively with the Cardiac surgical team at Birmingham Women and Children's.

Due to the nature of this new role, the job plan/timetable may be subject to review at 3-6 months, following a review of service needs and demand.

Main duties of the job

Specific duties of the post will include:

·        To set up a cardiology paediatric dental service within Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH).

·       To link in with cardiac outreach clinics around the region, locally and up to as far as Hereford.

·        To improve the dental health of children with congenital heart disease and to provide a care pathway with shared care provision with both primary and secondary dental providers. 

·        Co-ordination of the Paediatric Dentistry Services within the Children’s Hospital, working in close liaison with other substantive NHS Consultants within the service.  

·       Supervision and training of post graduate dentists in training within the department of dental specialities at Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties

·         Provision of a Paediatric Dentistry consultant service for patients referred from hospital colleagues, general medical and dental practitioners, and the community dental service at both the Children’s Hospital and Dental Hospital.

·         Provision of a treatment service for the more complex cases that are referred, working in close liaison with medical, surgical and dental colleagues to provide an integrated service.

·         Provision of specialist care under inhalation sedation for children with behavioural problems and dental phobias.

·         Provision of dental care under general anaesthesia for children with medical, mental and physical special needs at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

·         Link with primary and secondary dental care to provide holistic shared care close to the patient's home.

 

Education and training

·         Provision of clinical supervision, education and training for (Dental Nurses, Dental Therapists, Dental Core Trainees and post graduate dentists and doctors in training. This will include clinical and educational supervisor roles.

·         Participation in postgraduate training in conjunction with The University of Birmingham School of Dentistry for those involved in the dental care of children.

Public health role

·         To work with Consultants in Dental Public Health in determining the needs and demands of the resident population with respect to dental care.

·         To participate in the delivery of Core20PLUS5 Oral health, reducing health inequalities for children and young people.

 

Management

·         Co-ordination and development of clinical services within the Trust’s Service and Financial Framework, and in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy and clinical governance framework.

·         Provision of advice to the employing Trusts on the specification and contracts for paediatric dentistry services drawn up by health authorities or primary care purchasing groups.

·         Provision of advice to the employing Trusts for subsequent negotiation with purchasers on the availability of paediatric dentistry services.

National based NHS committee structures

·         Contribution to national and regional NHS based committees, for example - education, research, audit, examinations and conferences - subject to the availability of appropriate time within the job planning process and by mutual agreement.

Research, innovation and improvements in service, including audit

·         To be personally involved in research. The consultant will work in national and international collaborative research programmes as opportunities arise focusing on the care of children with cardiac anomalies.

·         To lead and/or play an active part in national, regional sub-regional and departmental audit.

·         To liaise with other providers of paediatric dental care in audit projects and to foster a commitment to evidence-based practice.

Special clinical interests

·         Encouragement will be given to develop special clinical interests which forward knowledge of the discipline or patient care within current financial constraints.

·         This list of duties is intended to be an outline only and is subject to review in the light of experience and changing demands in healthcare provision

·         The post-holder will require considerable flexibility and a wide range of management skills to meet the many challenges of developing and co-ordinating paediatric dental services.

·         The applicant should have successfully completed an accredited specialist training programme in paediatric dentistry and be registered as a Specialist in Paediatric Dentistry with the General Dental Council.

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC)
  • On the GDC Specialist Register in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • MSc or equivalent

Clinical

Essential criteria
  • Successful completion of an SAC-approved 5-year minimum training programme in Paediatric Dentistry, or within 6 months of completion, or equivalent
  • Experience of working within the Community Dental Service
  • Experience of working within a hospital/managing medically compromised children including children with Congenital Heart Disease
Desirable criteria
  • Interest and experience in the broad range of Paediatric Dentistry
  • Current holders of a substantive NHS or honorary NHS consultant contract in Paediatric Dentistry are eligible to be shortlisted.
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country are elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years minimum training period in the National Health Service for Paediatric Dentistry
