Consultant in Dermatology
NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant
Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust is a friendly, integrated healthcare provider focused on improving the life chances and health outcomes of our diverse population.
We have three strategic objectives:
People: To cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff.
Patients: To be good or outstanding at everything we do.
Population: To work seamlessly with partners to improve lives.
We run services from Midland Metropolitan University Hospital, Sandwell Health Campus, City Health Campus, Rowley Regis Community Hospital, Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre, The Lyng and Leasowes Intermediate Care Centre. Our GP practices and community teams provide care in schools, healthcare centres and at home.
Developing and caring for our People is fundamental. We were one of the first Trusts to provide the Real Living Wage, as well as a Live and Work scheme to support people at risk of homelessness into paid work and training. We offer a range of staff benefits, health & wellbeing support and will help you to bring your ambition to life through our bespoke training and development programmes. As “People” is one of our three strategic objectives, we make a continued commitment to prioritise support for all our colleagues.
Healthcare services have a significant impact on the environment. We are committed to embedding sustainable practices. We expect all colleagues to support the delivery of our Green Strategic Plan and to drive positive changes in their department.
Job overview
We are seeking to recruit enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant Dermatologists to join our Dermatology Team in our large teaching Trust.
The new post holders will join a department of 3 Consultant Dermatologists, 2 Consultant Surgical colleagues, and a dedicated nursing and administration team based at the Birmingham Skin Centre, City Hospital. The successful candidates will join a well-established self-contained department with an outpatient area, skin theatre and minor procedures area, phototherapy suite, Cutaneous Allergy Unit and a regional Laser unit. Specialist services available in the department include dermatological surgery, tertiary cutaneous allergy, laser therapy, paediatric dermatology, skin cancer, and a biologics service.
Consultants in Dermatology
The new appointees are expected to have a broad-based dermatology background. The jobs are flexible, and have been structured to provide surgical sessions which may be inclusive of Laser surgery for those with expertise in this area. Additionally the job provides general dermatology, paediatric dermatology, skin cancer and other clinics according to sub-specialty areas of interest.
The successful applicants would also be expected to participate in the cross site regional out of hours on-call rota for dermatology.
Applicants must be included on the GMC’s Specialist Register in Dermatology, or within 6 months of their expected date of receipt of CCT, at the time of interview.
Main duties of the job
It is expected that the post holders will have or will develop a subspecialty interest to complement the department and it is anticipated that the successful applicants will also have a well-developed interest in teaching, training and research.
The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national targets.
There will be a commitment to on-call in-hours and out-of hours as part of this post. The out of hours on-call commitment for this post is currently 1:20 cross site cover. The on-call availability supplement is currently Category B and currently classed as low frequency with an on-call availability supplement of 1% currently payable.
Working for our organisation
Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.
We have three strategic objectives:
- Our People – to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
- Our Patients – to be good or outstanding in everything we do
- Our Population – to work seamlessly with our partners to improve lives
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
A job plan and work schedule will set out agreed arrangements for how work is organised, where it is located, what in general terms the work comprises and when it is to be performed.
The Trust is committed to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands with the Dermatology department having both junior doctors in training, as well as medical students. The department is involved in a variety of research activities with ample opportunities to contribute to these, or initiate relevant dermatology research projects.
Research The University of Birmingham would like to support research by offering two protected research PAs to recently appointed (within 18 months) consultants. Sessions will be prioritised for those with a commitment to research and an interest in an area of research that maps to University of Birmingham strengths. Support will be assessed on a competitive basis.
At the University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in our workforce. These include people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, disabled people, LGBTQI+ people, and women.
A bespoke mentoring/training programme along with a £5k training/consumables budget will be provided. Assuming good progress is made the Research PAs will be for 3 years. In keeping with our track-record of supporting the development of colleagues, we anticipate that the appointees will be able to raise research funding to support their research time beyond the 3-year period.
