Job overview
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant to join our Ophthalmology Medical Retina Consultant team. The appointee will cover both sites, City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent) who are on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register Ophthalmology or who will be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview. Experienced clinicians without CCT will be welcomed. This job is a locum position for 12 months; there is a likely substantive post to follow.

Main duties of the job
The post will enable the successful applicant to develop new ways of working in medical retina, virtual services and further development of extended teams with AHPs. The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18-week patient pathway guarantee. There is a commitment to General Ophthalmology and Eye Casualty as part of this post.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration
- Entry on the Specialist Register in Ophthalmology (or entry expected within 6 months from the date of interview).
- Medical ophthalmology training
Desirable criteria
- Higher Degree
- Fellowship ( subspeciality)
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining CCT in Ophthalmology
Desirable criteria
- Experience of risk management.

Management and Administrative Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively

Clinical Effectiveness
Essential criteria
- Experience of conducting clinical audit
- Ability to use the evidence base and clinical audit to support decision-making

- Ability to teach clinical skills to medical and nursing staff and other disciplines.
- The ability to appraise junior doctors and other staff.
Desirable criteria
- Formal training in teaching
Other Requirements
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration
- Appropriate Immigration Status (where appropriate)
- An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
Personal Circumstances
Essential criteria
- Residence within a reasonable distance of the Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre
- Ability to undertake clinical commitments at any of the Trust’s sites.
Research, Innovation and Service Improvement Experience
Essential criteria
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- An awareness of current specialty developments, initiatives and issues.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and experience of the application of information technology to Ophthalmology
- Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
- Evidence of having undertaken original research
