Band 7 Highly Specialist Paediatric Physiotherapist

We are a growing and developing service and are therefore looking to recruit a new Paediatric Physiotherapist to join our team.  This is a community post, across the large city of Birmingham, with a caseload of children and young people with neurological and developmental conditions. We would like to recruit a Physiotherapist who is experienced in paediatrics and motivated to help  grow and develop the physiotherapy service.  The individuals should have proven paediatric  experience, working independently and as part of a team. 

The work will primarily involve working in school clinic with children with complex physical and learning needs, mainstream schools and community based assessments and intervention.  The treatments will be delivered using a Package of Care approach. The post holder will work closely with the child, family and other professionals involved in the child's care.

Candidates will also have responsibility for supervision of designated staff or students.

To work as part of multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams to deliver highly specialist interventions according to the agreed service packages of care and pathways.

To develop and maintain effective working relationships with parents / carers and other stakeholders, using highly developed negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills

To maintain, develop and promote excellence in clinical practice within the specialist area of the service, with reference to current research and evidence-based practice, contributing to safe effective practice in the specialist clinical area 

Demonstrate clinical leadership and represent the local team/service area in all appropriate meetings to support the planning and development of quality services across the city

To contribute to the identification of training needs of team members, other professionals and deliver training in the highly specialist area

As requested, to take delegated responsibility for ensuring equity of service delivery and management of waiting list and active caseloads across the city in conjunction with the Service Clinical Manager

As a Children’s community Physiotherapy Department, we are working as part of Inclusion Services within the Children and Families Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.  We work across the whole city, in a range of settings, including mainstream, special schools, health centers and Child Development Centre, thus requiring successful applicants to demonstrate a high level of flexibility.

We offer a supportive working environment with access to specialist clinical support, and an emphasis on sharing good practice through effective team working. We encourage our Physiotherapists to contribute to service development, and we value new ideas and experiences.

Access to reliable transport or means of travel is essential. 

  • Carrying out specialist assessments in service area. Developing and implementing a range of programmes of care and treatment to meet the needs of the clients, families and their environments in accordance with agreed pathways and packages of care in specialist area
  • Negotiating with multi-disciplinary team colleagues and carers with reference to case management of complex cases including instigating appropriate referrals as appropriate
  • Using specialist knowledge to inform clinical judgments and decision making for highly complex cases including decisions to discharge
  • Undertaking differential diagnosis of cases and contribute to overall decision-making for complex clients with a range of disorders as part of a team approach
  • Identifying and planning appropriate intervention including delivering assessment and therapy in groups and one-to-one sessions, in accordance with the pathways & service agreed packages of care
  • Taking responsibility for the delegation of therapy programmes to assistants acting as a mentor and supervisor in line with the local delegation policy
  • Providing appropriate treatment based on best practice, adapted to client’s needs and priorities including advising other professionals and parent on the appropriate type and level of support needed to develop skills in the home / school environment.

  • • HCPC Licence to practice
  • • Full Membership of Professional body , relevant to service area
  • • Evidence of recent relevant CPD activities in specialist area
  • • Relevant training in specialist area e.g. post graduate dysphagia qualification, Sensory-Integration, neurological rehabilitation
  • • Relevant training in clinical leadership

Experience

  • • Extensive experience of diagnostic assessment and intervention in specialist area of service
  • • Extensive experience of working as a specialist therapist with children and families in a range of multi-disciplinary and / or multi-agency teams in Local Authority and Health settings
  • • Extensive experience of managing a mixed and complex caseload of children and young people with a range of developmental disorders and delays
  • • Significant experience of managing safeguarding concerns and an understanding of local processes
  • • Relevant experience of using leadership skills for service development
  • • Significant experience in providing support and supervision to colleagues and other professionals
  • • Extensive experience of providing complex written and verbal information to others to a high standard
  • • Significant experience of delivering successful/effective training to a range of qualified professionals in the area of specialism
  • • Relevant NHS experience
