Job overview
This is a Trust Doctor (non-training) Level 2 post equivalent to ST3 and above. in General Internal Medicine.
Main duties of the job
- General medicine on calls as per the rota which includes long day shifts and night shifts.
- Continuous assessment of patients during on call, leading the team and supervising the junior doctors while on call
- Ensure the patients reviewed are post taken with a consultant during the on call
- Prepare the list of patients in the morning in preparation of the morning post take when on call and ensuring smooth flow of patients between emergency department medical wards (mainly acute medical unit)
- Cover medical specialities wards during the on call
- The post holder will be allocated to one of the medical specialities as a base department and will continue to participate in General (Internal) Medicine on calls. The medical specialities might include Endocrinology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, Acute Medicine, Stroke or Care of Elderly.
- To carry out daily ward round during the normal working days on medical wards
- Do specialities outpatient clinics on site and off site if required.
- Teaching medical students and trainee doctors and helping in nursing teaching programmes, run on the ward.
- Taking responsibility for organising timely appraisal and assessments with consultants for portfolio.
- Cover other colleagues in their absence in respect of annual, study leave and bank holidays.

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- Medical qualification recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Full GMC registration with licence to practice
- Advanced Life Support Certificate
- Eligibility to live and work in the UK
- MRCP Part 2 written
Desirable criteria
- MRCP(UK)
Knowledge, Training and Experience
Essential criteria
- A minimum of 12 months UK clinical experience or equivalent
- The applicant must be of good standing and fit to practise medicine safely in accordance with GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013) domains: • Knowledge, skills and performance • Safety and quality • Communication, partnership and teamwork • Maintaining trust
Desirable criteria
- 12 months experience at Foundation level or equivalent
Communication & Relationship Skills
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013)
- Has understanding of the importance of communication within a clinical setting
- Capacity to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team. Capacity to establish good working relations with others & values the input of other professionals in the team.
