Job overview

The Department of Clinical Haematology and Oncology is part of the Directorate of Specialist Medicine A. The department is housed in a purpose built outpatient area which integrated with the day case chemotherapy facility and adjacent to the 21 bedded ward. The successful applicant will be part of a large, friendly haematology team that provides clinical and laboratory haematology services within the Dudley Group of Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust serving a local population of over 320,000. The haematology department is JACIE accredited and performs Autologous stem cell transplantation.

The post holder will be a key individual in the haematology team and will be expected to participate in haematology clinics, and in the care of haematology patients on day case, in-patient areas, and haematology SDEC. The post holder will also perform bone marrow biopsies and participate in departmental meetings.  These responsibilities are shared with other middle-grade haematology doctors, together with three foundation year one doctors. Clinical supervision is provided by 7 resident consultant haematologists. Appropriate opportunities for professional development will be provided. Involvement in undergraduate and post graduate medical and nursing education will be expected, the degree dependent on the interests of the post holder. There may be opportunities for involvement in clinical research

Main duties of the job

  • Provide Middle Grade cover for Haematology in-patients
  • Provide day to day clinical supervision of Foundation Year one doctors in their work on the ward and day case areas.
  • Attend Haematology Clinics
  • Participate in Clinical Trails
  • Perform bone marrow biopsies
  • Participate in the Trust Undergraduate Medical Training Programme for students from Birmingham University Medical School.
  • Participate in Postgraduate Teaching programmes for medical and nursing staff
  • The postholder will be required to participate in an On call rota which is 1:5 weekends, this will attract 3% supplement.

  • • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • • ALS/ATLS/APLS or PALS
Desirable criteria
  • Higher qualification in Haematology

Essential criteria
  • • Completed at least 4 years full time postgraduate training (or it’s equivalent if part time) at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
  • • Teaching: evidence of interest and experience in teaching
  • • Audit: evidence of active participation in audit.
