Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a health care support worker to join our Learning Disability Team.  The post holder will have experience of provided individualised, patient centred care to people with a learning disability in a hospital, community or residential home environment.  We are seeking a highly motivated, compassionate and committed individual who can demonstrate good communication and advocacy skills and understanding of the needs of patients with a learning disability and how their care may need to be adjusted to ensure they receive the best care possible.  In return you will receive support to learn and develop new knowledge and skills.

Main duties of the job

To work within the Learning Disability team under the supervision of the Trust learning disability nurses to deliver a high standard of support for people who have a Learning Disability and/or Autism when they need to use the services of the Trust 

 Working under the guidance of the Learning Disability Nursing Team to ensure that reasonable adjustments are made for people who have a Learning Disability and/or Autism, to ensure that patients and their carers/families always receive a person-centred service.

Under the supervision of the learning disability nursing team, the post holder will develop therapeutic relationships with patients within current guidelines and protocols, having a positive impact on the patients wellbeing and experience

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE pass in English Language & Maths, or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ Level 2 in Health Care

Knowledge and Training

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of confidentiality
  • Good Computer Skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of duties required as per job description

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience or knowledge of alternative communication skills and behaviour which may be considered challenging
  • Experience of customer care/dealing with the public
  • Previous experience of caring for people in a care worker role within hospital, community or Residential Nursing Home setting

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Clear communication skills, oral and written

Planning and Organisational Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to organise and prioritise a diverse workload and work under pressure
  • Ability to work as part of a team
