Job overview

The post has a split timetable with a one in four cycle sharing with the other Consultants. This includes working in the ward covering G(I)M / renal patients for one week and the remainder of the time spent predominantly clinic based, dialysis work and related activities.  A formal job plan needs to be agreed on appointment with the successful candidate.

Whilst ward-based, there is a commitment to daily whiteboard rounds, at least two Consultant-led full ward rounds per week and three shorter ward rounds during the week. A seven-day care will be provided with compulsory ward rounds on Saturday and Sundays, which will be an essential part of the job plan.  The Haemodialysis Unit fully operate 6 days of the week and half a day on Sundays.  The CAPD Unit works seven days a week and out of hours there is an on-call system of acute dialysis support.  

Main duties of the job

To develop and integrate high class renal services across Dudley Group of Hospitals and the wider community

To liaise with relevant hospital departments, nurse practitioners, allied health professionals and colleagues in primary care to develop the renal service including innovative care pathways.

To work as a Consultant in General Medicine including participation in the medical on-call rota with other Physicians.

To provide daily consultant-led review of inpatients when working the ward-based timetable and contribute to 24/7 renal services.

To develop sub-speciality interests, in line with service and departmental needs.

To help deliver the UK Renal Association requirements, KPI indicators and other Department of Health initiatives across the Trust.

To contribute to MDT meetings in renal medicine, dialysis QAs and G(I)M as required

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Relevant professional qualifications
  • • Degree from a recognised University
  • • MRCP (UK) or recognised equivalent qualification
  • • GMC specialist registration or eligible within 6 months
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in clinical service development
  • Experience of teaching clinical skills
  • Training/experience in subspecialty of dialysis and community CKD care

Relevant registration requirements

  • • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice

Relevant knowledge and experience requirements

Essential criteria
  • • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT
  • • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients and offer expert clinical opinion in the specialties of GIM and Renal Medicine
  • • Ability to organise, prioritise workload
  • • Ability to advise on the smooth running of specialist services
  • • Ultrasound skills (level 2 and above), haemo and peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion skills
