Job overview
The Rheumatology team at DGFT consists of an established group of 8 substantive consultants, clinical nurse specialists and allied health professionals providing a wide range of general and sub-specialist rheumatology services to the local population and beyond.
The advertised post is a 10 PA post in general rheumatology, including leading the sub-specialist vasculitis service, and supporting the departmental research portfolio. Applications for part time working will be equally considered and the post can be modified for the appropriate candidate.
The team work out of three sites at present (Russells Hall Hospital which has inpatient, daycase and outpatient facilities, and the outpatient units at the Corbett and Guest hospitals); it is envisaged that expansion of the service in to community based sites will occur in the next couple of years. The team at DGFT runs sub-specialist clinics in connective tissue disease, vasculitis, osteoporosis, early arthritis, spondyloarthropathies, scleroderma and musculoskeletal ultrasound.
Main duties of the job
- To collaborate and work to maintain and develop outpatient, inpatient & day case rheumatology services.
- To provide, with the other Consultants in the specialty, a system of cover for annual, study and professional leave.
- To collaborate with Nurse Specialists in developing care plans and supervising clinical care.
- To provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the Trusts
- To develop a special interest to complement those of the existing Consultants in the department in accordance with the priorities of the Trust.
- To develop appropriate services and techniques required to fulfil clinical needs, within available resources.
- To take responsibility for the professional supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff, in conjunction with colleagues.

On call - The post holder will be required to participate in a 1:8 frequency on call rota which is Cat B and attracts a 2 % supplement.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- • Relevant professional qualifications
- • Degree from a recognised University
- • MRCP (UK) or recognised equivalent qualification
- • Eligible for entry on GMC specialist register for rheumatology alone or with General Internal Medicine (within 6 months)
Relevant registration requirements
Essential criteria
- • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
Relevant knowledge and experience requirements
Essential criteria
- • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCST
- • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the care of patients and offer expert clinical opinion in the specialty
Desirable criteria
- Ability to manage and lead the specialist unit if required
- Experience of teaching special clinical skills
- Evidence of having undertaken original research
