Job overview
This post is to provide support for a general ophthalmic service with a focus on the glaucoma sub-specialty.
The Ophthalmology department provides general and specialist Ophthalmology services. Outpatient Ophthalmology, Orthoptic and Optometry clinics are located at Russells Hall Hospital. An Orthoptic and Optometry service is also provided at the Guest Outpatients department. The department has a Diagnostic Hub located at Corbett Hospital to support virtual clinics.
The Optical Services team consists of 7 Orthoptists, 1 Optometrists, 1 Glaucoma technician, 7 Ophthalmic technicians, 2 OCT technicians and an Orthoptic Clerical Assistant. The department undertakes the diagnosis and management of amblyopia (or lazy eye) and strabismus (misalignment of the eyes or squint). With adults the department manage and treat a range of conditions leading to double vision, commonly following neurological episodes, such as strokes or brain damage. Orthoptists are also involved in Glaucoma practitioner clinics, intravitreal (IVT) injections, Specialist Adult Strabismus clinics, Low Vision Assessment, Pre-school and school vision screening, Visual processing difficulties clinics and Community clinics
Main duties of the job
To manage outpatients under the care of Consultants as timetabled
To be responsible for the diagnosis and management of emergency referral patients in the emergency clinic during the two weekly scheduled sessions
To communicate with colleagues within the trust and with GP and optometry colleagues in the community in a timely fashion
To participate in teaching, audit and CPD and take responsibility for patient administrative duties during their non-clinical session.
There may also be a requirement to undertake other similar duties as part of this post in order to provide a quality service. These will be consistent with the level of responsibilities outlined above.

- • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
Qualifications

- • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- • ALS/ATLS/APLS or PALS
Experience
Essential criteria
- • Completed at least 4 years full time postgraduate training (or it’s equivalent if part time) at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme in Ophthalmology or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
- • Audit: evidence of active participation in audit.
- • Teaching: evidence of interest and experience in teaching
