Job overview

To assist and support all members of the theatre staff and multi-disciplinary team, in providing safe, effective and efficient care to all adult patients during their time in theatres and recovery.

All TSWs new to post will be expected to attend classroom study and be part of a clinical team and will develop a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates they have both the educational knowledge and practical skills required to be a Theatre Support Worker whilst working towards Cavendish Care Certificate.

Circulating duties will be carried out within theatre and recovery as determined by theatre activity

The theatre environment and equipment will be prepared safely and appropriately.

Stock levels will be maintained within theatre.

All actions will adhere to Trust policies and procedures.

To actively participate in all forms of departmental communication, ensuring that the Trust agreed escalation structure is appropriately utilised.

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work mainly within the nursing team, tasks being allocated on a daily basis by the shift leader.

Assist the department manager in ensuring stock levels are maintained.

Chaperone nurses and doctors as required with examinations and minor procedures, support patient throughout the procedure emotionally.

To assist in the daily cleaning and preparation of equipment and the processing of dirty equipment and linen disposal correctly.

Undertake any other reasonable duties, which may be required as delegated by a qualified nurse, which are commensurate with the grade and nature of the post, to meet the needs of the service. This will include cover of appropriate duties during the absence of colleagues. You may also be deployed to others area within Gynaecology and Women’s service to meet and maintain safe staffing.

Essential criteria
  • Math’s and English Language GCSE A-C/9-4 or Level 2 functional skills/Key skills in Numeracy and literacy
  • Cavendish Care Certificate
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting and working in the theatre department
  • Good communication skills
  • Willing to undertake additional training as required
  • Able to demonstrate sensitive and empathetic approach to patients in treatment
  • Be able to escalate problems when required and report back to supervising registered practitioner
  • Ability to analyse working environment eg stock levels and to resolve or escalate as appropriate.
  • Ability to assess behaviors of service users and escalate to supervisory staff as needed.
