LOCUM CONSULTANT ELDERLY CARE MEDICINE
NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

The Locum Consultant posts in Elderly Care is to support the Acute Elderly and Orthogeriatric services. The posts will be working for 10 Programmed Activities per week with an additional PA available subject to negotiation. The post holder will join a team of Elderly Care consultants to provide high quality patient care including the provision orthogeriatric consultations in addition to hospital based duties.
The post holder will have the opportunity to lead the development of orthogeriartric services and improve the quality of care for patients presenting with fractures neck of femur and allied medical problems. The Trust and the Elderly Care department have a robust programme for mentoring the new Consultant appointment.
The Trust is willing to consider applications from those candidates who wish to work Less Than Full Time.

- To have a responsibility to provide a high quality clinical care to patients in Elderly Care and General Internal Medicine services and to continuously update practice based on evidence based medicine and audit.
- To provide advice to colleagues in other specialties on elderly patients with problems.
- To provide a comprehensive Out-patient service for elderly medicine for frailty band comprehensive geriatric assessment.
- Proactively engage with the multi-disciplinary team within Intermediate Care Services offering specialist advice and support as required.
- To provide support to the Primary Care Team (Frail and Elderly Pathway) for the management of patients in the community and Nursing homes.
- To support teaching and training of nurses, junior medical staff, medical students and to contribute to postgraduate medical education in general
- To undertake educational/clinical supervisor duties for junior doctors
- To support and encourage audit and research
- To actively participate in CPD and personal development plans.

Walsall Healthcare is an integrated organisation providing services from the newly built spectacular, light, airy, high-tech and ecologically-friendly building. The landmark development, in Pleck Road, heralds a new dawn for healthcare in the town and brings all of the hospital’s services under one roof.
This new hospital comprises of State of the art Outpatient, diagnostic and treatment facilities for short stay cases whilst the upgraded older building provides emergency care for emergency patients.
The Trust has a state of the art Palliative Care Centre which is the base for a wide range of palliative care and end of life services, working closely with St Giles Hospice who provide the beds on site for end of life care.
The Trust provides high quality community based health services at a variety of health centres, GP surgeries and community locations across Walsall and community based multidisciplinary services, to support people to remain at home including rapid response and home based care

Qualifications

- Basic Medical Degree
- Full MRCP or equivalent
Meini prawf dymunol
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Geriatric and General Internal Medicine via:- • CCT (Proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) • European Community Rights or • CESR
EXPERIENCE

- Evidence of Higher Specialist Training in Elderly Care Medicine (or be within 6 months of confirmed entry from date of interview)
- Wide experience in Elderly care Medicine equivalent to that required for a UK CCT
- Ability to offer expert clinical advice on range of problems
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and within a multi-disciplinary team
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff including SpR/StR level
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
