Gynaecology Nurse Specialist and Lead Governance Nurse

Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Job overview

Will be part of the Gynaecology team, supporting the specialist nursing and medical team in undertaking the assessment and triage of patients, ensuring they receive high quality care, support and advice.

To support patients on the Gynaecology pathways, from GP referral, through treatment and follow up or support discharge, through personalised care planning.

Be part of MDT team, attending locally and central MDT meetings, and be required to present cases for review.

Work with other appropriate professionals across all care settings of the pathway, building good relationships with both surgical and medical oncology teams. Support patient in clinic/ ward and virtual settings.

The post holder to be lead nurse of Governance within Gynaecology and Sexual health and support and provide guidance to all staff within our Services in relation to patient safety and clinical governance and to co-ordinate risk management within the  departments by ensuring the Local Incident Managers are managing their incidents in a timely manner and actioning risks identified, will work alongside the Lead Consultant for Governance to achieve this.
The post holder will be a registered nurse with a qualification and experience in a specialist Gynaecology field and who is motivated and will adhere to the values of the Trust.

Main duties of the job

Assess referrals to ensure they are  on the correct pathways and enable appropriate selection and application of treatment.

Support patient through process diagnosis, management and treatment and follow up of cancer.

Lead and support others in undertaking Incident Reviews and  producing reports and action plans for the departments.

Support Lead Consultant for Gynaecology Governance and Matron for Gynaecology and Sexual Health to co-ordinate patient safety and clinical governance activities within the Gynaecology Department.

Support and provide guidance to all staff within the deprtments in relation to patient safety and to co-ordinate risk management within the department by ensuring the Local Incident Managers are managing their incidents in a timely manner and actioning risks identified.


Acknowledge and act on all concerns raised including investigating, escalating and dealing with the concerns where appropriate.  To share the learning outcomes of incidents and complaints with the  teams and demonstrate changes in practice as a result of complaints and incidents to embed a culture of learning.

Support  in the investigation of complaints.

Produce and present monthly summary reports of incidents highlighting themes, changes in practice and areas of learning incidents.

Support in the maintenance and update of the Care Group Risk Register.

Ensure high standards of care is given to all patients and to monitor this through regular auditing of the nursing care quality indicators.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To support patients on the gynaecology pathways.

To develop and work closely with members of the Multi- Disciplinary Team regarding all aspects of the gynaecology service.

To attend MDT Meetings and develop the presentation skills, as you may be required to present cases.

To act as the patients, advocate, supporting their involvement in decision making and delivering complex diagnoses and information.

To work within the NMC code of professional practice, and within policies, procedures and guidelines of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust
Have the skills to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care and treatments within gynaecology.

Contribute to the writing of protocols and procedures applicable to the gynaecology service.

To have the knowledge base that reflects up-to-date issues in gynaecology, management to enable appropriate selection and application of treatment.

To develop advanced skills in assessment and evaluation in supporting the Specialist nurses in nurse led clinics.

To develop expert knowledge of gynaecology conditions.

To support patient through process diagnosis, management and treatment and follow up of cancer.

Have the skills to recognise changes in patients’ conditions who require the intervention of others and refer on as appropriate.

Have the skills to support patients with concerns with investigations/treatment options with empathy and specialist knowledge of disease management.

To support the clinical team for patients on risk stratified follow up.

Make appropriate referrals to other members of the trust, community and Primary care.

Undertake mandatory training within required timescales, meets updates and training requirements for the post within timescales.

Promote the service both within the Trust and externally to the organisation representing the Trust and specialty at a regional and national level.

Contribute to the maintenance of a peer support network of support, information and learning with other specialist nurses at a local and national level.

Utilise local, regional and national networks to contribute to and develop own knowledge base.

With the lead cancer nurse and the lead clinical nurse specialists, support the development cancer nursing and supportive care for cancer patients.

To be involved in the review of all written information available for patients and carers, ensuring these are offered and are accessible at all points of the pathway of care.

To work within the NMC code of professional practice, and within policies, procedures and guidelines of the Trust.

Support the Matron/Care Group Team in developing the Gynaecology management service and assist in the preparation of business plans for service development.

Attend departmental team meetings.

To deliver specialist training to the nurses within the Gynaecology department in regards to management of women with Gynaecology conditions.

To have awareness and oversight of the Unit budget and Trust goals.

Participate in regular supervision.

Carry out duties with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunity Policy.

Seek advice and support from Line Manager whenever necessary.

Maintain professional conduct including appearance at all times.

Ensure maintenance of Professional Registration.

As part of the leadership team will support the Gynaecology Care Group management team to ensure Clinical Governance is embedded within the department.
Lead and support others in undertaking Serious Incident Reviews and After Action Reviews producing reports and action plans for the Gynaecology care group and Clinical Assurance and Safety Committee.
Support Lead Consultant for Gynaecology Governance and Matron for Gynaecology and Sexual Health to co-ordinate patient safety and clinical governance activities within the Gynaecology Department, including reviewing case notes, investigating incidents and near misses and analysing themes and trends from incidents and near misses.
Support and provide guidance to all staff within Gynaecology and Sexual Health Services in relation to patient safety and clinical governance and to co-ordinate risk management within the Gynaecology Department by ensuring the Local Incident Managers are managing their incidents in a timely manner and actioning risks identified.
Liaise/attend meetings with the West Midlands Gynaecology Network.
To provide feedback on incidents and progress the implementation of recommendations from multidisciplinary meetings.
Work with the leads for clinical risk to identify clinical risk issues and implement changes in practice.
Support the implementation of recommendations from Government and professional bodies in relation to care.
Maintain a clinical and leadership role.
To promote a culture of raising and escalating any concerns about patient and public safety without delay.  To ensure care is delivered within the “duty of candour” guidance and ensure nurses are open and candid with all service users about all aspects of care and treatment including when any mistakes or harm have taken place.

To support the Senior Sister/Matron and Divisional Director of Gynaecology, in investigation of complaints.

To act as an advocate in relation to patients and their families who are vulnerable or at risk from harm, neglect or abuse.
To assess the effectiveness of current practice within the Gynaecology Department and introduce innovations that lead to improved quality of care.
To ensure that all nursing care is delivered in accordance with Trust procedures, guidelines and policy and to ensure that these policies and procedures are understood and adhered to by all members of the Gynaecology team.
To establish effective working relationships with all members of the multi-professional team to promote good communication and a collaborative approach to the care of patients.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Qualification in specialist area of Gynaecology
  • Mentorship or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification
  • Adult Registered Nurse on the NMC register
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced communication skills training
  • Counselling skills or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive relevant experience in Gynaecology Nursing
  • Evidence of professional leadership/management experience
  • Experience in the use of incident/risk management system
  • Skills to competently assess / manage / investigate a range of gynaecology related conditions.
  • Knowledge of risk management processes and Controls Assurance
  • Specialist knowledge of the management of women's health conditions
