Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Job overview
We are seeking to appoint a full time Specialty Doctor to work in the department of Paediatrics in the middle grade rota to commence as soon as possible. The appointable candidate will be working 10 Programmed Activities per week basic with additional Programmed activities for on call commitment.
It's an excellent opportunity for career progression, whether you like to build up your portfolio and apply for paediatrics training or choose to progress through CESR route. We as a department have a great reputation in the region and take pride to support our non-trainee doctors to progress through either route. We have well established CESR pathway and currently 3-4 of our speciality doctors are in different stages of the pathway. Every year 3-4 of our non-trainee doctors progress in to training.

Main duties of the job
Post holder will be contributing in middle grade rota .
Duties for the post holder will be undertaken in the Paediatric Admissions Assessment Unit, Paediatric Wards, Level 2 Neonatal Unit and Paediatric Outpatient Department, as well as attending delivery suite, postnatal wards when required.
Main responsibilities:
- Attending Induction Course which includes awareness training of NHS Structure and Local Trust
- Becoming acquainted with management protocols/guidelines for Paediatrics and help update them
- Undertaking ward rounds in conjunction with a Consultant
- Assessing and managing patients in different setting i-e ED, PAU, Delivery suit, neonates, postnates.
- Attending clinics with a Consultant
- Attending the APLS/NLS course if not already trained
- Assisting and leading in neonatal/pediatrics resuscitation
- Supervising the clinical work of junior Paediatric doctors
- Ensuring delivery of a quality Paediatric service
- Ensuring children are fit for discharge
- Undertaking appropriate IT training
- Participation in clinical audit
- Attending Mandatory training
- Working with colleagues from non-medical professions
- Multi-disciplinary assessment of children’s health needs
- The balance and interaction of psycho-social and medical factors affecting children’s health
- Awareness of the public health aspects of children’s health
- Gaining confidence in teaching/training of medical/nursing staff
- Improving knowledge of management issues
Working for our organisation
Walsall Manor Paediatrics department is a very supportive department and when appointed you will be allocated a consultant to support your professional development. The department has an excellent reputation for training and was rated by the GMC as in the top quartile for teaching in the country.
Our current doctors say they are “well supported” and “the consultants are very approachable”. This is in part, a consequence of the resident consultant model, which means they are present on the shop floor 70% of the time.
We are a friendly, cohesive team with regular formal and informal meetings. We have an open-door policy for ad hoc conversations and advice and all consultants have sub-specialty interests including one who has an integral role in emergency department. Moreover, as a combined
community and acute hospital, we have close liaison with community paediatrics, offering another opportunity for your comprehensive training.
Specialty doctors are highly encouraged to develop and
achieve their career goals, with 10 trust grade doctors going into training posts in the last few year and a further four having successfully achieved entry into the specialist register via the CESR route. Two of these are now highly valued consultants in the department.

Essential criteria
• Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
• Previous NHS Paediatric experience
• A minimum of 4 years full time postgraduate training and experience (or equivalent EEA training) of which at least two years will be in Paediatrics as SHO/ST1-2 or Registrar level
• Ability to demonstrate relevant experience and qualifications to undertake middle grade duties including 2nd on-call duties
• Two years training in Paediatrics to include Neonatal experience
• Ability to undertake full range of Paediatric practical procedures and conventional and patient triggered ventilation (e.g. IV Cannulation, UVC, UVA, long lines)
• Recent MRCPCH part 1 or equivalent by examination
