Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust provides integrated acute and community Healthcare in the West Midlands serving a population of 260,000 residents. Walsall Manor Hospital houses the full range of district general hospital services. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and we are continually upgrading. Construction of the new integrated critical care unit was completed in 2018, extension of a Neonatal Unit and an approved plan to build a brand new, state of the art Emergency Department which commenced in 2021

Theatre Services are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated member of staff to join our team of Level II Operating Department Support Workers within our Theatres
The role involves: supporting clinical staff within the Operating Theatre environment to deliver a high quality service for the people of Walsall.
You will be required to rotate through the specialties below to gain knowledge and experience and work shift patterns including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.

- Orthopaedics / trauma
- Breast surgery

- Obstetrics and gynaecology
- ENT and paediatrics

Training opportunities available include apprenticeship for ODP training, NVQ and many internal training opportunities.
You will need to want to work towards obtaining the clinical health care support (QCF level 2) qualification. Math’s & English at grade C/Level 2 and above are required for this post as there will be opportunities to progress your career in the future.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Anticipate and prepare the theatres for use Checking all equipment is in working order
2. Assemble and attach all specialist equipment to operating tables, camera, systems etc.
2. Prepare equipment prior to start of surgery undertaking routine checks
reporting any defects to the Team Leader
3. Collect patients from wards, ensuring correct identity, patients records
and accompany patients to theatre, returning patients to wards post
recovery.
4. Assisting in the transfer of patients from trolley to table and back, assisting in
the positioning of patients on the table to the surgeons requirements under
supervision.
5. Preparing and assisting medical staff with the application of Plaster of
Paris
6. Holding Limbs as directed by medical staff during preparation of the
patient
For One & All
7. Applies tourniquets under supervision of the surgeon.
8. Moving of Theatre Lights and assisting in the use of headlights as instructed by
the surgeon
9. Undertake circulating duties as and when directed by theatre
practitioners
10. Assist in the anesthetic room and recovery as directed by the theatre
practitioners.
11. To undertake general cleaning duties in order to maintain a suitable operating
environment
12.To clean down Theatre between procedures, as appropriate, ensuring the
thorough decontamination of the Theatre, equipment and instrumentation.
Returning equipment and consumables to their storage area
13.Ensuring Stock levels are maintained and all HSDU is appropriately stored for
use, identifying or anticipating any problems to be reported to the team leader
14.In the absence of the storekeeper, to be responsible for the ordering
and storing of consumables in the store room.
15.Ensure that all documentation, both clinical and administrative, is
completed electronically or written correctly
16.Responsible for the cleaning of Surgeon’s theatre shoes and general
housekeeping duties at the end of the day.
17.Collect blood from blood bank. Take specimens to path lab, ensuring correct
documentation is completed and specimens are transported correctly.

QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- • Candidate must be willing to undertake or already possess NVQ Level 2.
- • Must have basic English and mathematical skills.
- • Well-presented written application, demonstrating the ability to produce high quality documentation as required by the role i.e.; spelling and grammatical accuracy.
