Applications are invited for a Senior Assistant Technical Officer post in our busy Immunology laboratory. The job is based at the New Cross Hospital and involves different shift patterns 7.30am - 3.30pm, 8.30am - 4.30pm, 10am - 6pm.

The Immunology laboratory service is part of the Black Country Pathology service which is a combination of the Pathology services based at Dudley, Sandwell & West Birmingham, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

The position offers an excellent opportunity to work within a modern, well equipped Immunology laboratory performing a wide range of diagnostic tests.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will be an efficient and flexible member of the Immunology team providing a high-quality diagnostic service through supporting the scientific and technical activities of the laboratory.

To supervise the activities of the medical laboratory Assistants of the laboratory, with the support of Band 5 and above Biomedical Scientists.

To act as support to Biomedical Scientists in the laboratory – this may involve finding samples, printing worksheets and, under supervision, performing basic laboratory tests and loading various automated machines in Immunology.

To act as a support to Medical Laboratory Assistants this may involve unpacking, sorting and separating specimens for the Immunology department and entering patient information onto the Pathology computer system. This may also involve scanning and filing laboratory records.

To work within the written Policies and Procedures of the Directorate especially in relation to Health & Safety and Quality.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We are looking to appoint a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Assistant Technical Officer who would welcome the challenge to join our friendly team in the Immunology laboratory. The successful candidate will be expected to work in a busy environment alongside a team of Consultants, Scientists and support staff.


Previous experience of working in a laboratory environment would be advantageous although full training and support relevant to your level of experience will be given to the successful applicant.

Essential criteria
  • English and Maths (GCSE grade C or equivalent)
  • Higher science qualification eg A level / BTEC

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Laboratory Experience
  • Basic understanding of Quality control and assurance
  • Awareness of Health and Safety in relation to clinical laboratories
  • Understanding of confidentiality
  • Have keyboard and basic Information Technology (IT) skills including use of laboratory computer system
Desirable criteria
  • At least 1 years’ experience of working in a laboratory environment
  • Recent working experience in a blood sciences laboratory

Supervision / Management

Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of supervising and / or training or other staff
