The Estates & Facilities Division is seeking Bank Staff to support the activities of the Waste Management Team (Waste and Recycling Services) at New Cross Hospital.

The Waste Management Team aims to provide an excellent support service to the Trust, its patients, visitors and staff.

You will be part of a modernising team providing waste management services to support the Trust’s regulatory obligations.

We are looking for enthusiastic self-motivated people who can work well on their own and as part of a team.

Bank working, on an ad hoc basis to cover the needs of the service provides an ideal opportunity to gain experience of working in a hospital environment. This knowledge and experience can be helpful when permanent positions become available.

You must have a flexible approach to working hours and to meet the demands of the role; this flexibility is something that you may also find suits your needs.

All training and a uniform will be provided.

Undertake all routine waste collections and support all waste and recycling activities as instructed by line management within their level of professional competence.

Utilising the tow trucks

Operate the waste disposal compactor

Utilising the road sweeper

Operate the onsite bailers

Utilising folk lift truck

Operate jet wash

Cleaning compactor area

Ensuring bin compounds are kept locked and free from litter

Collection and disposal of Clinical and Domestic waste containers across the site

Emptying ward Clinical and Domestic Waste cupboards

Report all fly tipped waste to your superior

Collect all waste types as and when required

Ensure Newcross is free from blown litter

Ensure all internal and external entrances are free from litter

Ensure all external smoke and bus shelters are free of litter and swept

Promote waste segregation and recycling

To work on all Trust premises as required by the service working on the grounds of all premises that the Trust has an obligation to maintain

Prioritise workload with support from the team leader to offer minimum disruption while maximising benefit to patient care and the Trust

Assist higher skilled grades on new work including any labouring required

Complies with local waste operational health & safety standards and procedures

Complies with hazardous waste regulations

Use all relevant tools, machinery and communications equipment as required

Undertake training relevant to the post

Demonstrate a basic knowledge of waste and recycling legislation

Prepares and uses equipment, materials and tools for maintenance and repairs (Waste Containers).

Work flexibly between 0600 - 2100hrs as the service demands including weekends – this could include an annualised hours working arrangement or overtime.

Communicates effectively with team leader, managers and other disciplines (including service users) when planning work to maximise efficiency and utilisation of resources

Undertakes regular and ad hoc overtime when requested and at short notice.

Undertakes training and updating on regulations, standards, procedures, local rules and new techniques appropriate to work undertaken.

Work as part of a wider team or on his/her own as the circumstances demand – this includes other staff either internal or external to the Trust.

Ensure that all timesheets are fully completed via the Labour Management System and additional defects and/or follow on work (regardless of trade) is reported to the team leader.

To be responsible for and keep mandatory training up to date.

Required to work in accordance with all current Legislation governing waste to include but not be limited by the following:

Current Waste Regulations and HTM.07.01

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)

To comply with all the Trust’s Health & Safety policies and procedures

To ensure accurate completion of incident forms in accordance with Trust Policy.

To ensure accurate completion of daily check sheets and report any defects to your superior

To be familiar with department fire procedures, location of fire exits, alarms and equipment.

To observe all fire precautions.

Undertake fire safety training as per the Trust’s standing orders and attend fire lectures at least once a year.

There is a frequent requirement for moderate physical effort for periods including lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects and there is an occasional requirement to exert intense physical effort for short periods such as assisting moving waste.

Works in hazardous areas such waste compound, tugway taking safety measures to avoid danger and prevent injury to themselves and to others and to prevent damage to equipment. Ensure hazardous areas are locked to keep unauthorized persons out at all times.

May be exposed in plant rooms to risks of gas escape, escape of fumes, heat, hot surfaces, and noise and oil spillage. Occasionally may be exposed to uncontained body fluids, for example during waste disposal etc.
