Job overview

This post would be particularly beneficial for those doctors wishing to gain additional senior registrar experience in obstetrics and gynaecology in a supportive environment and develop an area of interest and expertise.  A variety of SITMs are offered in both obstetrics and gynaecology. This post will provide the opportunity for the post holder to access specialist clinical sessions appropriate to their development needs and participate in clinical work.  Please see RCOG Training matrix to review expected competencies as we would expect the post holder to be competent at skills ST1-5.  The post holders will be required to contribute to a 48 hour EWTD full shift rota. 

Main duties of the job

1)      To support the inpatient service in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at New Cross Hospital.

2)      Outpatient workload: duties involve antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists

3)      Research, education, audit and continuing professional development

a.            To take responsibility for continuing professional education in accordance with                   guidelines  set out by the appropriate college/faculty/professional body.

b.            To initiate and participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

c.            To work in collaboration with colleagues in developing skills to provide new ways of      working across different professions, organisations i.e. community/primary care.

4)      In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.

5)       Duties will involve labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover, antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of Obstetric and Gynaecological patients under supervision as necessary.

6)       The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.

7) General elements

a.       To participate in clinical and other service activities with the object of ensuring a high standard of patient care.

d.       To contribute to the management of the clinical service and service development.

e.       To contribute to the research and development of the department.

f.       To provide cover for colleagues as appropriate and in accordance with local Trust arrangements and Trust Policy.

g.       To observe the Trust’s agreed policies and procedures

h.       To take responsibility for your own health and safety complying with any safe working arrangements, policies and procedures which are in place.

i.        To accept a duty to other staff and patients to ensure that any hazards are reported and managed appropriately.

j.        To ensure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of patients to be able to contact you when necessary

k.       We are committed to continued support for professional development, with study leave provided within budget.

l.        The appointment(s) will be full time (fixed term) and will have an educational supervisor and a mentor.

m.      Support for the new appointee will primarily be from within the Department.

Essential criteria
  • MB BS (or equivalent) MRCOG part 1
  • Full GMC registration
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • To carry out general obstetric duties in antenatal clinics and on labour ward Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, midwives, sonographers and other agencies.
  • Good organisational & management skills in order to help coordinate maternal medicine MDTs

  • Knowledge and/or training in Human Factors.
  • MRCOG part 2/3

  • Able to undertake on-call work on the junior registrar tier in Obstetrics/Gynaecology (supported by Senior Registrar)
  • Perform competently - Basic CS - ERPC - Non rotational ventouse and forceps - Perineal repair
