Southmead Hospital, Bristol

Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine

Applications are invited for a posts in Intensive Care Medicine at one of Europe’s leading hospital sites at Southmead Hospital, Bristol. Applicants who wish to undertake partner specialty work in anaesthesia  and/or critical care transfer medicine will be welcome.

Main duties of the job

The posts will be based in the purpose built 46 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The post holder will have a dedicated ICU week and on-call responsibility to the ICU only. The successful applicants will join a team of 23 Consultant Intensivists, and around 40 Postgraduate Doctors in Training.

Working for our organisation

The 46 bed Southmead Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is now one of the busiest ICUs in the country, with a team of over 300 staff treating more than 2500 critically ill patients each year. Within the team we currently have 23 Consultant Intensivists and around 40 Postgraduate Doctors in Training. Southmead ICU is the regional specialist critical care centre for neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology and stroke thrombectomy, neurology, renal medicine, trauma and orthopaedics (including revision joint replacement, complex spinal and pelvic surgery) and urology. It hosts the Severn Network Major Trauma Centre, the Bristol, Bath and Weston Vascular Hub and the South-West Burns Network.  It delivers some of the highest intensive care and major trauma survival rates in the country.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Unit has a strategy for development aligned with the Trust strategy. Briefly this encompasses 5 domains: delivery of exceptional care for patients, investing in the ICU workforce, supporting expanding Trust services, developing the Unit’s Research and Innovation programme, and improving collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders. We are looking for enthusiastic Consultant Intensivists to help deliver this Strategy and enhance Critical Care in Bristol at a pivotal time for the specialty.

The ICU is divided into 4 ‘pods’ of 12 beds, with 2 Simulation bed spaces. It has excellent adjacencies to the emergency department, 24 operating theatres including a vascular hybrid theatre and another with capability for intra-operative MRI scanning, and 4 interventional radiology suites with both 24-hour Interventional Radiology and Interventional Neuroradiology cover.

The post will be based in the ICU and the postholder will have a regular dedicated ICU week and on-call responsibility to the ICU only. The frequency of this commitment will depend upon the wishes of the successful candidate and requirements of the department but will vary from 1 in 4 weeks on ICU (full time ICU) to 1 in 6 weeks on ICU, with the balance of work being made up in anaesthesia or transfer medicine.

The ICU is part of the South-West Critical Care Network, and submits its data to ICNARC and ICCQIP
