Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity to recruit Senior Biomedical Scientists in Blood Transfusion to join our team at UHBW! The successful applicant will be posted at Bristol Royal Infirmary, although virtual / telephone support may be required for Weston General Hospital transfusion laboratory.

The BRI blood transfusion service is a large and comprehensive service providing transfusion support for BMT patients and the Fetal Medicine Unit, as well as supporting the Bristol Therapeutic Apheresis Services and Regional Haemostasis services. The laboratory also provides specialist paediatric transfusion support for the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. We provide expert training, which is unique across the region. We work closely with the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centres’ Haematology team, we support trials and carry out innovation and development projects; staff are encouraged to present and publish their work.

UHBW laboratories teach Haematologists, Clinical and Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, Visiting students and other staff.

The successful applicant will have HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist and a Masters degree in a relevant science subject or equivalent.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for managing a team of Biomedical Scientists and support workers to deliver a fit-for-purpose Blood Transfusion Laboratory Service
  • Develop a culture in which staff are empowered and encouraged to continuously improve the delivery of a high quality service
  • Ensure the development of realistic objectives for staff, through leadership, motivation and performance review
  • Be an efficient and flexible team member providing a high quality diagnostic service through scientific and technical activities commensurate with the training and education of a Biomedical Scientist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Experience of compliance with standards as required within work duties such as UKAS standards ISO15189 and MHRA
  • There may a requirement to work OOH
  • To take part in the transfusion senior on-call OOH rota – to provide expert advise and assistance remotely.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Biomedical Sciences
  • HCPC State Registration
  • Evidence of CPD
  • MSc or equivalent in Blood Transfusion other pathology subject but with demonstrable Transfusion knowledge
Desirable criteria
  • BBTS Specialist certificate in Transfusion or IBMS HSD in Transfusion
  • Management/Leadership Training

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of Quality System standards and regulations United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), MHRA, GMP and BSQR
  • Have an in-depth and extensive knowledge and expertise in Blood Transfusion Sciences
  • Knowledge and Experience of electronic blood issue
  • Knowledge and use of Haemovigilence Systems
  • Knowledge of electronic blood tracking systems
  • Significant experience of Blood Transfusion
Desirable criteria
  • Significant experience in using Quality Management Systems

  • Knowledge and skills in the operation of Pathology/Blood Transfusion LIMS
