Job overview

The job purpose is to work as part of a team supporting patients to make informed choices about their own sexual health, including preventing and managing sexually transmitted infections, contraception and other clinical sexual health care. The post-holder will provide a LARC list based at South Bristol Community Hospital and provide medical cover and advice to the Pregnancy Advisory Service. The successful applicant will work

1 in 7 Saturday mornings at Central Health Clinic and may also be required to work at other Unity clinic sites including the community and Weston Integrated Sexual Heath (WISH).

Main duties of the job

This post is for a part time 2.5 PA Locum Consultant or Specialty Doctor in Sexual and Reproductive Health. The post-holder will contribute to delivering integrated sexual health care, within Unity Sexual Health services, based at Central Health Clinic, Tower Hill Bristol BS2 OJD.  Unity Sexual Health was formed in June 2017 following UH Bristol winning the tender to deliver sexual health services across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.   The position is open to those who meet the Person Specification as a Locum Consultant or Specialty Doctor.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities

This post is for a part time 2.5 PA Locum Consultant or Specialty Doctor in Sexual and Reproductive Health. The post-holder will contribute to delivering integrated sexual health care, within Unity Sexual Health services, based at Central Health Clinic, Tower Hill Bristol BS2 OJD.  Unity Sexual Health was formed in June 2017 following UH Bristol winning the tender to deliver sexual health services across Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset.   The position is open to those who meet the Person Specification as a Locum Consultant or Specialty Doctor.

 

Communication:

·      The post-holder will need to have excellent communication skills working as part of the multi-professional team within Unity Sexual Health. They will need to have a non-judgemental approach to patient consultations for dealing with issues of a sensitive nature and a full understanding of patient confidentiality.

·       The post-holder will also be able to liaise effectively with other professionals. This may include GPs as well as with colleagues within the Trust: gynaecology, medical specialities, pathology and other departments as required.

·         The post-holder will be familiar with safeguarding procedures for young people and vulnerable adults and will be expected to report concerns within the department to senior medical staff as well as liaise with the respective Trust team and local Social Care departments.

 

Patient Care:

The post-holder will work as part of the multi-professional team in delivering integrated sexual health care at Unity in the Level 3 Central service and Community sites. The post holder will assess, advise on and prescribe a wide range of contraception including Long-Acting Reversible Contraception. They will investigate, manage and treat sexually transmitted infections. They will be involved in the assessment of young people with sexual health needs and management of patients referred from the Sexual Assault Referral Centre. They will also review clinical results in the department and act on abnormal results of investigations, arranging appropriate referrals as required. There is an expectation that the post-holder will follow departmental protocols and work in line with the Clinical Governing Body and Trust standards guidelines. The post-holder will perform any other duties that are required for the smooth running of the service, including prospective cross-cover of essential services when his/her colleagues are on leave.

 

Leadership and Management:

The line management responsibility of the post-holder will be to the Unity Clinical lead. 

UHBristol and Weston is a teaching Trust and the Consultant will teach medical students as part of the commitment of their Division to undergraduate education.  Medical students sit in many of the clinics for one-to-one teaching and are also taught in lectures and small group tutorials during their Obstetrics & Gynaecology module.

 

Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance:

The post-holder will have the opportunity to take an active part in the department audit arrangements. There will also be an expectation to work in line with local and national clinical guidelines. The post-holder will be expected to maintain confidentiality and discretion and comply with the terms of the Data Protection Act and local Trust policies at all times. Additionally, the post-holder will comply with all legislation relating to the control of fertility, including the Abortion Act, NHS Trust and PCT (Sexually transmitted Diseases) Directions 2000.

 

Departmental and Division Teaching:

Unity Sexual Health has four half-day training and audit meetings per year for all clinical staff. In addition, there is a weekly (Wednesday pm) meeting for teaching, audit, journal club, staff administration & service issues. There is a multidisciplinary psychosexual meeting on Thursday lunchtime and a weekly hospital Grand Round on Tuesday lunchtime during the academic year. There is a monthly one-hour safeguarding cases review meeting open to all staff members and regular specialist education sessions for implant and coil fitters.

 

Administration:

The routine administrative content of this post e.g. dealing with results, writing to the General Practitioners and making referrals etc. is allowed for in the timetable. Some office space can be provided at Unity Sexual Health and there is secretarial support available at Unity Central.

 

Other:

The post-holder will need to have basic computer skills allowing use of hospital systems and the clinic electronic patient record. The post-holder will need to be able to travel to the Unity Community clinics that they are working in.

 

Proposed Working Week

·         2.25 PAs (Wednesday- LARC and PAS)

·         0.22 PA clinic sessions (including Saturday clinics)

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • 3 years whole time equivalent experience in relevant specialty since first obtaining full or limited registration. (E) or
  • Consultant experience and on the Speciality GMC register (E)
  • Previous experience with Sexual & Reproductive Health Work and/or genito-urinary medicine and/or Abortion Care. (E)
  • Knowledge of child protection procedures and Lord Fraser Guidelines. (E)
  • Experience of audit and willingness to participate in projects (E)
Desirable criteria
  • Up to date knowledge of FSRH and BASHH guidelines (D)

Skills and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Willingness to participate in abortion care and provide medical support for Pregnancy Advisory Service (E)
  • Able to demonstrate skills in managing patients presenting for contraception and or sexual health (E)
  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate (E)
