Education and Professional Practice Lead – for Learning Disability, Mental Health & Autism.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Learning Disability or Mental Health Registered Practitioner who is highly motivated and has a passion for teaching others to join our Corporate Education Team.

This is a new and exciting role, and we are looking for an ambitious and highly motivated individual to lead on the development and delivery of the Learning Disability, Autism and Mental Health Education programmes, for Nursing Midwifery and AHP practitioners across North Bristol Trust (NBT). With a primary focus on improving patient safety, experience, and compliance.

As a specialist practitioner, the post holder will be responsible for advising and contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice, through education learning and research activities. This will also include contributing to the development of policies, protocols, and guidelines, working in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues within NBT, our external partners and regionally as required. 

The post holder will undertake audits as appropriate to role and will be required to contribute to the development and delivery of NBT’s Training needs for all aspects of Learning Disability, Autism (LD/A) and Mental Health (MH).

The role includes:

  • Designing, implementing, and evaluating learning and development solutions to meet the 
    organisational training needs for LDA.
  • Leading on the development of Education and Training covering the entire speciality, including supporting teams to realise the organisational goals.
  • Working collaboratively and co-operatively with others to help develop a workforce with the skills, knowledge, and competence necessary to deliver safe effective patient care for those people with LDA accessing our services and to enhance the quality of service delivery.
  • Work in collaboration with the Learning Disability and Autism Liaison Nurses, Mental Health Liaison Nurses to assess gaps in knowledge and skills and develop programmes or source training packages to cover these gaps.
  • Act as a spokesperson for LD, Autism and Mental Health Education.
  • Network with clinical staff to share best practice.
  • Lead on the development of a sustainable resource with wards and departments in relation to enhancing practice and maximise learning opportunities.
  • Be able to communicate highly complex training data and report to all levels of staff and to relevant forums using a variety of communication skills, platforms, and presentation.

The will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate ability to effectively support the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training.
  • To support the Trust to achieve best practice in the training and development of staff in caring for patients with Learning Disability and Autism L&A)
  • Keeps up to date with current and emerging thinking in health and social care practice,  associated with learning disability, mental health and autism .
  • Develop teams and team working by providing a team facilitation service.
  • Be the lead for LD & A training programmes and initiatives.
  • Support our Learning Disability and Autism Liaison Nurses to deliver, evaluate and analyse training for staff within NBT.
  • When training, promotes the principles of safeguarding from the Care Act 2014 and support staff to develop skills in MCA and BI decisions and signposts to the mandatory training provided by the integrated safeguarding team.
  • Support the Associate Chief Nursing officer for MH, LD&N, and the mental Health Matron to develop and oversee a work plan for the delivery of the Mental Health Strategy.
  • Act as a mentor/supervisor to less and more experienced members of staff across the trust in the area of learning Disability and Autism.
  • Offer support and advice and supervision to new and more junior members of the team.
  • Promote people’s equality diversity and rights in all education programmes.

Qualifications/Education & Training

  • Current UK Registered Qualification with a Professional Body e.g., NMC, HCPC with LD /MH specialist qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Educated to Degree Level in relevant Health related specialist subject or equivalent
  • Postgraduate Teaching Qualification e.g., PCGE or equivalent / mentorship/SSIP
  • Leadership & Management Qualification or equivalent experience

  • Evidence of master’s level education or equivalent in related subject

Experience

  • Recent Management and Leadership Experience at Band 6 or equivalent.
  • Experience delivering high quality services to people with a learning disability and autistic people in a professional role or can demonstrate an equivalent level of skill
  • Experience of identifying, designing & evaluating training needs

Knowledge

  • Good knowledge and understanding of local, regional, and national issues/initiatives affecting LD, Autism and Mental Health and how these relate to delivery of education
  • Good Knowledge of education and quality assurance processes
