Job overview

Interested in developing a career in Clinical Health Psychology and a rewarding job with a great team?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a clinical psychologist to join the National Spinal Injuries Centre (NSIC) and develop clinical skills of working in rehabilitation with inpatients across the lifespan.  The NSIC team consists of clinical psychologists, a psychological therapist and family counsellor, administrator and assistant psychologists and leads national and international clinically based research.

Applications are encouraged from those currently employed as a Band 7 or qualifying in 2024.  You will be supported to develop your skills across predetermined competencies of therapy, supervision, teamwork and leadership.  Once you have been assessed as meeting these competencies, you will move to band 8a in the service.

This post includes working sometime in CYP, either a half a day or seeing some cases so maintain skills in this area which can  be discussed at interview.  Required working days would be Tuesday, either Monday or Friday, other day to be agreed on appointment.

Main duties of the job

Clinical interventions include individual CBT, ACT and mindfulness-based therapy, neuropsychological rehabilitation and specific condition interventions such as for chronic pain.  The post will involve close working with non-psychology colleagues from across the MDT.  A systematic rehabilitation approach facilitating self-management skills is core to our provision, with the team leading the renowned Stoke Mandeville Spinal Needs Assessment and Goal Planning Programme (finalist for HSJ in 2016).

The NSIC provides inpatient care to 30% of adult spinal cord injuries within NHS England and is the leading provider of paediatric spinal cord injury services. The NSIC at Stoke Mandeville Hospital pioneered the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury and the psychology team is an active contributor to the ongoing research and innovation of the Centre, with over 150 publications in peer reviewed journals, textbooks, and an increasing portfolio of research impact including podcasts, policy/guideline development and social media engagements.

Testimonial from a previous Band 7 and 8a team member after family relocation: ”Genuinely the best decision as a newly qualified - the quality of applied psychology I gained from working alongside such skilled and supportive colleagues at the NSIC was the absolute best start to my career”.

The NSIC Psychology Team is part of a wider BHT Psychological Services Team of 31 psychological therapists working across Buckinghamshire.
