Job overview

Locum Consultant Post

Applications are invited for a consultant post in Department of Medicine for Older People. The successful candidate will be based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital with some clinical activity across our community sites.

Our acute services are located at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. These include the newly established Frailty Same Day Emergency Care Unit and Short Stay Frailty Unit. We run a separate on call for the frail older population. We have two acute wards in addition to a highly regarded orthogeriatric service.

We support patients and prevent unnecessary hospital admission by seeing decompensating frail older patients in our Multi-Disciplinary Assessment Service at Wycombe hospital, and our Community Assessment and Treatment Services at Marlow and Thame community hospitals. We also run a telephone advice and triage line for Primary Care & Community Providers.

We are working to embed Frailty Recognition Recording & Responding across the system as well as an ability to look after unwell frail older patients in their own home in a Virtual Ward environment.

Job plans can be tailored to accommodate career progression and promote subspecialty interests. Whether you are looking to work full time or part time, we are delighted to support you.

For further information please contact Dr Brian Macinnes or Fiona Pinches.

Main duties of the job

These are exciting times for Medicine for Older People in Bucks. We are working towards strengthening our presence at the front door as well as our foothold in the community, particularly with regards to Frailty.

We are looking for a dynamic person with strong leadership and innovation skills to work in a team to develop Frailty services in Buckinghamshire.

We aim to have a small but robust acute footprint whilst maintaining and strengthening our larger community footprint. For us the front door is the patient’s front door and not the AED.

The department is keen to accommodate special interests; we are happy to discuss and consider appropriate changes in the weekly job plan.

A sensible, patient-centered approach to Frailty is expected in the post-holder, as well as flexible working at both acute and community level.

The post-holder will take part in the department’s regular teaching to medical students, junior doctors and other health professionals. He/she will supervise junior staff, as well as other members of the department’s clinical team, and community clinicians.

The post-holder will be required to comply with Trust and GMC standards for appraisal and revalidation, including continuing professional development.

This is a forward looking post and will evolve. We are expecting the post-holder to take an active part in the development of the role and to help drive geriatric services forward into the next decade.
