Job overview

Paediatric Practice Development Nurse who will work strategically and operationally within the education team to promote teaching and ongoing development of the paediatric nursing team at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. 

Main duties of the job

  • Highly motivated and experienced Registered Nurse offering expert advice and support to the nursing team and takes the lead in ensuring that clinical skills, competencies and practice of nursing staff are developed in line with patient care and service needs. 
  • Act as an expert practitioner and role model in order to develop a workforce with the ability to provide safe and optimum quality standards of care.
  • Work strategically and operationally within the education team to promote the teaching, training and on-going development of the Nursing team including Health Care Assistants, Nursing Associates and Nurses of all grades ensuring continuing personal, professional and practice development is an active process within paediatric services.
  • To actively participate in Trust and Directorate management teams, as well as the broader multi-disciplinary team, attending and where necessary presenting in appropriate forums both internal and external to the Trust. Networking closely with BOB and Paediatric Operational Delivery Networks.
  • Providing a suitable and stimulating learning environment for students and for the on-going professional development of registered staff. 
  •  Be aware of the Trust’s safeguarding policies and procedures and demonstrate the ability to be able to and enable others to raise concerns and work closely with the Trust’s safeguarding team and other agencies to protect children. Ensuring staff have regular access to safeguarding supervision and training.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Children’s Nurse
  • Degree in Paediatrics
  • Evidence of further continued professional development
  • Relevant post-registration clinical care qualification.
  • Safeguarding Level 3 Training
  • Practice Assessor and Student Supervisor Workshop or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • Practice Educators Qualification
  • First Line Management Course or management training

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Worked in a variety of acute care paediatric settings
  • Extensive and recent experience in acute paediatric nursing.
  • Experience of acting as mentor – coach – preceptor
  • Audit
  • Standard setting
  • Staff appraisal / development
  • Risk management
  • Previous experience as shift/team leader
  • Experience of teaching students, HCA’s and qualified staff
  • Evidence of professional updating
Desirable criteria
  • Has had responsibility for the organisation and management of a ward/department

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • Highly skilled clinical practitioner with significant recent experience within acute care.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with patients, relatives and MDT team in English
  • Phlebotomy / cannulation skills
  • Competency in IV drug administration.
  • Infusion pump skills
  • Central line skills
  • Ability to work required shift pattern and special circumstances
  • Up to date knowledge of paediatric nursing and NHS issues
  • High motivation and ability to motivate others
  • Knowledge of evidence informed and research-based practice
  • Computer literate
  • Good time management skills
  • Ability to work within a team and independently
  • Managerial and leadership ability
  • Ability to resolve conflict/dispute in a non-confrontational manner
  • Insight into the needs of the Trust and Regional and Government initiatives
  • Competent in the use of non- invasive ventilation such as high flow.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to enable liaison with patients, relatives and multi-disciplinary team and to produce concise written reports and notes.
  • Maintain a positive attitude to change and work within the management team.
