Job overview

We are looking for a full time Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join the well-established and highly respected Specialist Palliative Care Services in Buckinghamshire.  The services are hosted at Florence Nightingale Hospice in Aylesbury, and are part of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

The post holder will join a team of 3 Consultants to support a wide range of palliative services, including the hospital, hospice, community, and hospice at home teams. 

The 12 bedded in patient hospice forms part of the rotation for Specialist Palliative Medicine Training in the Oxford Deanery; the GP VTS scheme and Foundation Year doctors. We also train medical students.

The teams are constantly looking at ways to enhance patient care, and we have a large non-cancer patient cohort, as well as links with Oncology, Medicine for Older People and the Frailty teams.

Main duties of the job

  • This role will take forward the development of Community Palliative Care as part of the community services transformation in conjunction with other providers.
  • Work with the Acute and ICB, Rennie Grove, ACHT, CCG, primary care and FNH charity collaborations.
  • Ability to deliver patient choice of preferred place of death
  • Part of the Senior Management team in palliative care
  • Compliance with CQC recommendations 2014 and 2019

Dr Helen Pegrum is the Clinical Management Lead for the SDU (and Clinical Lead for the Hospice and Community Services); Dr Jane Brundish is the SDU Governance Lead (and Clinical Lead for the Hospital Team) and Dr Jane Henderson is the Trust EOLC lead.  Liz Monaghan is the Lead Nurse  for Palliative Care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The role enhances Specialist Palliative Care and End of Life Care services in Buckinghamshire and education training alongside the 3 current Palliative Medicine Consultants and the well-established Palliative Care Services. The Post holder  will be expected to oversee aspects of the Palliative Care services as per their job plan. 

The 4 Consultants will ultimately rotate through, and lead on, different service areas over fixed periods of time.  There are several initiatives in early stages, and the post holder will be encouraged to develop these further alongside the senior clinical and management teams.  The on-call service is shared with our colleagues in East Berkshire, on a 1.8 rota currently.  This is paid as a supplement of 5%.
