Job overview
The successful applicant will be a registered Nurse/operating theatre practitioner with a substantial general surgery scrub experience. You will be responsible for leading a theatre team on a day to day basis, whilst supporting the longer-term planning of care delivery within one specific speciality. You will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work using your own initiative as well as working effectively within a team.
Stoke Mandeville Hospital is proud of the safe and effective care which we deliver. We are now looking for a flexible, self-motivated, experienced theatre scrub practitioner to take on this exciting and challenging role in our team. As the emergency surgery site for the Trust, our department mainly support operations across a range of emergency and trauma General surgery, Plastic surgery, Urology, Trauma orthopaedics, Gynaecology and Obstetrics.
Main duties of the job
Act as a credible, visible role model for all junior theatre staff.
To support the theatre team in resolving clinical and operational issues on a shift by shift basis whilst ensuring that best practice care is delivered.
To work in collaboration with the theatre manager to establish cleanliness culture across the department ensuring that the patient environment is well-maintained, clean and safe.
To work with the theatre manager, the Infection Prevention Control Team and the domestic support team to ensure adherence to cleaning contracts are maintained and monitored ensuring that any issues are escalated in a timely manner.
The post holder will need to maintain and supervise junior members of staff in ensuring that the theatre care delivered to all patients is established on an individual assessment, it is planned evidence-based care, it is documented that it is implemented and it is evaluated as to effectiveness.
The post holder will be expected to work closely with the theatre manager to ensure that quality driven indicators are monitored through audit within the area.
Ensuring high standards are maintained that promote best outcomes for patients.
Provide appropriate and consistent professional advice to other members of the theatre team.

Essential criteria
- RN (adult) or ODP
- Diploma in related field or equivalent in related field
- Relevant post registration experience
Desirable criteria
- Completion of appropriate leadership and Management programme
- Teaching and Assessment recognised qualification
- Recognised advanced communication skills
- degree in related field or willingness to work towards

- Recognised advanced specialist training in chosen field or relevant experience
Experience

- Significant experience at band 5 in scrub role
- Previous experience in teaching, coaching, mentoring

- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to use word, excel and power point to level of producing document or reports
- Dexterity required for administration of medicines and clinical interventions
Desirable criteria
- Ability to demonstrate appropriate non-antagonistic behaviour in stressful situation
- Evidence of participation of audit, research and development of staff
- Ability to plan and organise complex activities, or programmes that may adjustment depending on activity

- Ability to take part on the on call rota
Desirable criteria
- Post holder may be required to work across all sites and will be required to travel in a timely manner
