Are you an NMC registered nurse with more than 6 months experience? Are you up for a challenge where no working day is the same? Ever thought about working in the Emergency Department? Now is your opportunity to do so.

After having a business case approved to expand the team due to a fast-growing service, MKUH are hiring for Band 5 Staff Nurses to join their thriving ED department. You do not have to have experience within ED, you are still welcome to apply if you have experience within a mental health hospital, a community hospital or if you simply feel you have solid transferable skills. Your external knowledge will be extremely valuable to our team.

During the event, you will have the opportunity to meet some of the ED team including our consultants and matrons as well as a chance to tour ED and view a simulation room. Additionally, you will have the chance to hear more about the daily duties of our ED nurses.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide a high standard of effective, compassionate and professional nursing care within the framework of National, Hospital and departmental policies.
  • To work in conjunction with other staff as a member of the nursing team.
  • To comply with all hospital policies and to practice within NMC standards and guidelines.
  •  To maintain standards of care within the Emergency Department.
  • To assist the senior team/operational team in achieving the Emergency Access targets.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Professional

To demonstrate continuous development of professional skills and knowledge.

  • To comply with all hospital policies and to practice within NMC standards and guidelines.
  • To contribute to the development of the Unit using research-based practice.
  • To main accurate and legible records of nursing care.
  • To support the Senior Sister in managing change within the Department.
  • To contribute to the wellbeing of the team by demonstrating leadership and support for colleagues.
  • To demonstrate high levels of enthusiasm and commitment.
  • To assist in maintaining the safety of the personnel within the department, the environment and equipment in line with health and safety regulations.
  • To maintain standards of care within the Emergency Department, which reflect the Departmental philosophy.
  • To ensure that patients and their relatives’ needs are met in a courteous, helpful, and compassionate way. 

 Management and Clinical

  • To be aware of the Trust’s Nursing and Midwifery Strategy.
  • To assess, plan and implement care for allocated patients
  • To be competent at assessing range of facts or situations requiring comparison of a range of options.
  • To make judgements on problems requiring investigation and analysis, e.g. assessment of patient condition
  • To promote effective communication with patients, relatives, and members of the multi-disciplinary team:
    • To be competent in communication of complex, sensitive information.
    • To be aware of barriers to understanding and understand and utilise persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training skills when required.
    • Communicate sensitive, confidential information concerning patients/clients using empathy, persuasion, and reassurance.

  • To attend meetings to represent the Unit as required.
  • To act as a Link Nurse with other areas.
  • To deal with complaints in the absence of the Nurse in charge.

Education

  • To participate in ensuring that the department’s environment is conducive to teaching and learning.
  • To act as mentor/assessor to student nurses and adaptation students.
  • To act as a good role model for all members of the ED team.
  • To undertake in service training programmes and attend all mandatory training sessions required by the Trust.
  • To extend scope of practice in accordance with hospital policy to meet with needs of the Unit.
  • To assist in the orientation/induction of new staff and to act as preceptor as required.
  • To participate with audit and clinical governance issues within the department.

 Clinical Governance

Participates in the Trust’s clinical Governance activities ensuring that all the elements are embraced within one’s own practice and that of the clinical area.
