Job overview

The purpose of the post is to enhance and develop the breast service within the Trust. This post is offering 10 programmed activities with a 9 DCC:1 SPA spilt. A further 0.5 SPA is available for negotiation depending on additional programmed activities, (this would then make it a 8.5 DCC : 1.5 SPA). DCC is delivered on the MKUH site predominantly and SPA can be done remotely. Further information can be found in the Job Plan section below.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will play a key role in ensuring the department provides the local population with a high quality and accessible breast service which achieves national cancer wait targets. The Breast service offers a symptomatic and screening service.  The post will require experience in diagnostics, treatment, including surgery for, patients with breast cancer and benign breast disease. We are willing to support a new consultant with their transition to consultant working. We are proud to offer dual consultant operating opportunities allowing for simultaneous bilateral operating, improving efficiency, and senior support for complex cases to promote for consultant development.

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic colleague with experience in breast oncoplastic surgery to join us and help continue to expand our oncoplastic service. The breast unit is a stand-alone NHSBSP screening unit covering Milton Keynes. We have a partnership with the neighbouring Trust for oncoplastic MDT’s and Plastic surgical procedures and we are looking at developing this joint working and with Oxford.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job plan will be confirmed but to include:

  • All day operating lists
  • New 2WW clinic
  • Results clinic
  • Oncoplastic clinic (if appropriate)
  • MDT including Oncoplastic MDT

 This job has no general surgical on-call commitments.

 The job plan on appointment will consist of a split of 9:1 DCC/SPA with additional SPA available for negotiation.  The SPA component is made up of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings etc.) and non-core activities. Non-core activities are discussed and agreed within the Trust (via an agreed tariff and, on occasion, through ad personal agreement). Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. Non-core SPA is only available if specific activities and objectives are mutually agreed in job planning.  

Through its inclusive and comprehensive job planning process, the trust commits to providing equitable working conditions to medical colleagues across specialties and their sub-specialties. Delivery of job plans, whilst owned by consultants and their Clinical Service Unit Leads, is overseen by the Divisional Director and subject to peer challenge at divisional level, thus enabling a further layer objectivity to our commitment in this regard.

Person specification

Qualifications/Registration

Essential criteria
  • Medical degree, and FRCS or equivalent
  • Applicants must be on the Specialist Register of the GMC or within 6 months of eligibility
  • Completion certificate of training or equivalent

Experience/Training

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 7 years post graduate experience, including Specialist registrar training in approved posts or equivalent
  • Training in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Undertaken TIG fellowship or similar

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and application of up to date evidence based practice, including breast surgical oncology
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Breadth of experience within and outside specialty to include sentinel node surgery

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in the multi-disciplinary management of patients
  • Understanding of clinical risk management

Communication Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
  • Evidence of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
  • Ability to work constructively in a team environment
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to be able to appraise both juniors and other staff

Leadership Skills

Essential criteria
  • To motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff

Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in audit

Other Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of the General Surgical directorate
  • To balance individual requirements against those of the division and the Trust as a whole
  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients
  • To accept management roles within the directorate as requested by the Clinical Director
