Job overview
Applications are invited to apply for a Consultant Cardiologist with an interest in Interventional Cardiology at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
This is a new post, created specifically to support and develop the nascent interventional cardiology service at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) which has been developed in close collaboration with Oxford University Hospitals (OUH). Interventional (PCI) activity undertaken in Milton Keynes is provided and governed by OUH. Thus, professional accountability and clinical governance for all coronary intervention and invasive diagnostics will be primarily via OUH’s Interventional Cardiology CSU and Clinical Lead. The post-holder is expected to participate fully as a member of that CSU and its consultant group.
The duties of the post are shared between MKUH and OUH. The majority of the postholder’s duties will be delivered at MKUH but it is a condition of the appointment that the postholder will provide sessions at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
In close collaboration with the interventional and surgical teams in Oxford, the successful candidate will help coordinate the interventional cardiology service at MKUH on a day-to-day basis, facilitating optimal care for patients with acute and chronic coronary syndromes, attending MKUH and OUH MDTs and providing specialist clinics. They will also contribute to all aspects of the inpatient and outpatient general cardiology service at MKUH.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties
- Provision of all aspects of care for patients undergoing angiography and PCI in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory at MKUH (cath lab at MKUH Mondays and Fridays)
- Provision of all aspects of care for patients undergoing angiography and PCI in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory cath lab at OUH.
- Provision of acute and elective care of cardiology patients in MKUH, including the provision of the cardiac in-reach service, triage the daily e-referrals from primary care and advice and guidance for GPs.
- To take responsibility for all aspects of management of adult cardiology patients, in conjunction with community services and the regional centres.
- To participate in multidisciplinary meetings.
- The successful candidate will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of their patients to be able to contact them when necessary.
· The post-holder will contribute to Saturday ACS coronary lists at the John Radcliffe Hospital, aligned with their on-call commitment (currently 1 in 8).
· All consultant cardiologists in MKUH participate in a consultant of the week rota for general cardiology, currently approx. 2 in 13 weeks. On these occasions the job plan is modified to undertake cardiology ward rounds, cover advice and guidance and provide support for acute cardiology referrals. This commitment is reviewed periodically and may change.
