Prescribing Support Dietitian
Department: Nutrition & Dietetics
Part-time: Band 7 £46,148 - £52,809 per annum pro rata
Hours: 15 hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working (there may be additional hours available in the future)
Candidate will less experience are welcome to apply, as we will support your development from B6 to meet B7 competencies.
We are looking for an experienced, motivated Dietitian with paediatric skills to work with BLMK ICB Medicines Optimisation, GPs, Dietitians, pharmacists and other staff across MK to deliver cost effective nutrition prescribing.
Outstanding interpersonal and time management skills are essential, alongside flexibility, commitment to teamwork and confidence working independently. Excellent communication skills are required, as the post will include delivering education and training.
Our dietetic team, over 30 Dietitians, support workers and admin staff, cover acute, community, paediatric, and learning disability services. We provide opportunities for clinical and leadership CPD, external education, and career development with our Therapy Practice Education team.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will work in partnership with the ICB Medicines Optimisation team, GPs, dietitians, pharmacists and other primary care staff across MK to deliver cost effective nutrition prescribing for babies and children. Excellent communication skills will be required, as the post will include provision of education and training to primary care staff, including GPs.
- To be responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of primary care prescribing guidelines, protocols and care pathways relating to paediatric nutritional products.
- To provide specialist advice and support on nutrition prescribing in primary care and establish links with secondary care.
- To provide education and training for primary care staff including GPs on assessment of patients, cost effective prescribing of nutritional products and patient monitoring.
- To advise on the dietary management of individual patients in identified GP practices with a range of medical conditions, with a particular focus on cow’s milk allergy (CMA). This will involve ensuring the reintroduction challenge is conducted to confirm correct diagnosis where appropriate, as well as checking and reviewing prescriptions are in line with local guidance.
- To be involved with supporting parents and carers of infants and children CMA with cow’s milk free weaning and the milk ladder, in order to reduce inappropriate prescriptions and the use of specialist formula in a timely manner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You should have excellent interpersonal and time management skills, with an ability to be flexible and have a strong commitment to teamwork whilst also being confident about working independently in primary care. Ideally you will already have experience of working with primary care professionals.
You will be joining our wider dietetic team based at MKUH of over 30 registered dietitians, dietetic support workers and admin staff covering acute, community, paediatric and learning disability services.
You will be joining a forward-thinking department that is itself developing at a great rate; this opportunity could enhance your dietetic experience towards your new career.
Medicines management:
- To develop, implement and monitor prescribing guidelines, protocols and care pathways for paediatric nutritional products in Milton Keynes.
Clinical advice:
- To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for advice relating to the nutritional needs of patients in the community.
Responsibility for resources:
- To evaluate patient information in line with current evidence and produce new patient information as required.
Communication:
- Using high level skills based on extensive training to motivate, counsel and support patients, clients, staff and carers in behaviour change. This will require well-developed skills in negotiation, persuasion, tact and diplomacy and will include group work and one-to-one contacts.
Responsibility for research:
- To collect data for audit and research purposes as required.
Education and training responsibilities:
- To be responsible for planning, implementing and evaluation training for health care staff (GPs, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, non- medical prescribers) on the assessment of patients, cost effective prescribing of paediatric nutritional products and patient monitoring.
Strategic and service responsibilities:
- To attend, be active and interactive in Medicines Management departmental meetings as required.
Organisational/administrative responsibilities:
- To work with the Medicines Management team administrator and practice systems to identify caseload and record activity.

Qualifications and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent in Nutrition and Dietetics
- Registration as a Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council HCPC (UK)
- Documentary evidence of a range of specialist continuous professional development (CPD) equivalent to a post graduate masters level experience
- Sound therapeutic and clinical knowledge
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and awareness of national guidelines relevant to specialist clinical area
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge of evidenced based clinical practice for a range of conditions.
Desirable criteria
- Attendance to BDA paediatric specialist module/s (MSc or CPD level)
- Membership of the British Dietetic Association
Experience
Essential criteria
- Post –registration experience in a range of dietetic clinical areas.
- Significant paediatric dietetic experience.
- Ability to autonomously manage a caseload of complex patients.
- Active member of multi-disciplinary team (MDT) including liaison with GP’s, clinical specialists, community teams etc
- Ability to lead projects within specialist area e.g using national guidance, benchmarking and clinical audit
- Proven leadership experience in relevant clinical specialty
