Senior Respiratory Physiologist

Department: Respiratory/Lung Function Unit

Band 6 £35,392 - £42,618 (plus 12% R&R)

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Respiratory Physiologist to join the MKUH Lung Function Unit, for a fixed-term 12-month contract  covering Maternity Leave.

You will work as part of a team delivering a specialist physiologist-led respiratory service alongside the broader multi-disciplinary team to deliver exceptional care to a complex and diverse group of patients. Our service provides a large range of physiological studies including routine lung function tests, broncho-provocation tests, ABG/CBG, 6 min walk tests. We also offer a sleep service where the patients can have their sleep diagnostics, initiation on CPAP, and reviews of their therapy.

As a senior respiratory physiologist, you will be able to independently undertake and perform simple initial interpretation on a range of respiratory diagnostic assessments, in accordance with nationally recognised codes of practice and clinical guidelines. 

You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, with colleagues from a range of disciplines, including student physiologists to deliver effective, coordinated care.

Responsibility – patient/client care

   The post holder will independently plan, undertake, and perform simple initial interpretation on a range of lung function diagnostic assessments in accordance with guidelines. Such investigations could include:

o   Spirometry, peak flow rates, flow/volume loops

o   Gas transfer

o   Static lung volumes

o   Reversibility of airways obstruction with bronchodilators

o   Field exercise tests

o   Exhaled and nasal nitric oxide

o   Exhaled carbon monoxide

     Set up sleep studies and analyse the results to issue treatment and advise patients. This could include instigating the provision of therapy for sleep apnoea. The post holder will also be involved with sleep apnoea outpatient clinics and will undertake a clinical and technical review of patients on sleep therapy (CPAP).

Responsibility for policy and service development

       The post holder will contribute to the development of procedures by commenting on proposed changes to laboratory protocols and procedures, making their own suggestions when asked.

       They will liaise with and report to medical staff and report pressures and problems within their area of responsibility to their manager.

  • Good knowledge, both practical and theoretical of test, procedures and workings of the department of respiratory physiology and sleep physiology.
