Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Allergy service offer a full diagnostic service to different allergic diseases and has a large cohort of patients (>200) with aero allergen hypersensitivity on immunotherapy for allergic rhinoconjuntivitis (grass, tree and dust allergy). We also provide immunotherapy service for patients with bee and wasp venom induced anaphylaxis (>200 patients). Severe urticaria service has over 150 patients for long term follow up on biological therapy. In addition to monthly food challenge clinic we also provide drug allergy service with approximately 80-100 drug challenges per month.

The service has a large cohort of patients with primary and secondary immune deficiency, with approximately 450 patients on immunoglobulin replacement therapy and approximately 800 patients under long-term follow up. Patients with immune deficiency often suffer multiple comorbidities, particularly affecting the respiratory system or gastrointestinal tract, and are prone to severe (and often difficult to treat) recurrent infections. To address these challenges the Clinical Immunology team work closely with colleagues in other departments who have a special interest in immunodeficiency and run joint clinics with colleagues in Respiratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases. A specialist Hereditary Angioedema clinic is run in conjunction with the Allergy Department and Paediatric Immunology.

The department has close links with the University of Cambridge and is involved in a number of research studies. The service is Quality in Primary Immunodeficiency Services (QPIDS) accredited.

The clinical service works closely with the diagnostic Immunology laboratory based at Addenbrooke’s hospital which provides a comprehensive regional and supraregional service to aid in the diagnosis of diseases of the immune system.
