Consultant in Diabetes with General (Internal) Medicine
Consultant
Job overview
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Diabetes and General (Internal) Medicine at Addenbrooke’s Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
This is a new post, and comes at an exciting time in diabetes management both at Addenbrooke’s and nationally. You will be joining a team of dedicated and highly skilled consultants and allied health professionals providing cutting edge care to patients with diabetes from across the East of England and further afield.
Main duties of the job
The primary role will be in the management of type 1 diabetes, including pump therapy, and antenatal diabetes. We are one of the leading centres nationally for insulin pump therapy and hybrid closed loop therapy, with over 1,300 adults on insulin pumps, and a strong history of academic research into development of technology in diabetes. We also have a large award-wining antenatal diabetes service, which is well respected nationally.
The appointee will have the ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of diabetes problems. There will also be ample opportunities to be involved in the teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other health professionals, and the opportunity to become involved in clinical trials and research.
You will be fully registered with the GMC and ideally have a CCT in Diabetes and Endocrinology, or be within six months of award of CCT at the time of interview. Applications are welcomed from those unable to work full time for personal reasons or those wishing to job-share.
As part of our commitment to supporting the medical workforce in the part they play in delivering an excellent caring service to patients, all newly appointed Consultants attend our five-day Consultant Development programme within a year of joining the Trust. Leadership is a key requirement of doctors’ professional work and this innovative programme is designed to support Consultants to hone the leadership and management skills they need to succeed at CUH.
Working for our organisation
The applicant must have demonstrable skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking in English that enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues, as set out in the GMC’s Good Medical Practice (2013). Non-UK applicants must possess the IELTS/OET exam before obtaining a GMC licence to practice.
Applications from job seekers who require skilled worker sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.
It is a requirement for skilled worker applicants, applying for entry clearance into the UK, to present a criminal record certificate from each country they have resided continuously or cumulatively for 12 months or more in the past 10 years. Adult dependants (over 18 years old) will also be subject to this requirement.
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is an Equal Opportunities Employer.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Diabetes and Endocrinology services at Addenbrooke’s are based in the Wolfson Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic (WDEC), which is situated in the Addenbrooke’s Treatment centre within the Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (IMS), a purpose-built centre dedicated to research, education and clinical care in the field of endocrine and metabolic disease. The department benefits from close links with the University of Cambridge, and as a result has been and continues to be involved in pioneering research into many aspects of the management of diabetes.
The role also involves a contribution to the in-patient service, which includes some general medical patients, but has no involvement in the general medical on-call rota. The current contribution to the in-patient service is 7-10 weeks per year whole time equivalent.
Cambridge is a lovely place to live and work. It is a thriving city which has witnessed remarkable growth in recent years, driven in part by the development of the science and technology sectors here, as well as the world-famous university. We are uniquely placed in having access to a vibrant and diverse cultural scene on our own doorstep, as well as stunning countryside close by, while also benefiting from excellent links to London (direct trains to King’s Cross Station in under 50 minutes). We are lucky to have many excellent schools both within the city and in surrounding areas.
The applicant will be able to offer expert clinical opinion on all aspects of the management of diabetes, and will be involved in teaching and training of junior staff, medical students and other healthcare professionals. Working on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus also offers unrivalled opportunity to collaborate with Cambridge University and other local research institutes and pharmaceutical companies, as the campus continues its rapid expansion and consolidates its position as one of Europes leading centres of biomedical research.
The applicant will be particularly encouraged to contribute to or lead translational and clinical research using the excellent clinical research facilities allied to the Institute of Metabolic Science within the adjacent Cambridge Clinical Research Centre.
