Continual development and improvement of bioinformatics tools, processes and workflows to ensure the Laboratories offer the highest quality diagnostic genomic service

Data analysis, interpretation, and writing of laboratory diagnostic reports.

Ensure the Genomic Laboratory Hub meet legal and professional requirements for safe transmission and storage of large amounts of complex genomic data

Practical and theoretical training of scientific and technical staff in bioinformatics

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

1. Assume responsibility for specific aspects of EGLH bioinformatics services, under the supervision of bioinformatics leads

2. Participate in duty bioinformatician rota, perform routine bioinformatics tasks, and provide bioinformatics support to colleagues

3. Aid in the analysis, interpretation and reporting of clinical results

4. Design, develop, deploy and maintain clinical bioinformatics software, databases, systems and processes for high-throughput analysis and interpretation of data generated from next generation sequencing, and other technologies

5. Be responsible for safe and effective data storage, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards

6. Write and maintain documentation relating to EGLH bioinformatics services

7. Adhere to EGLH policies regarding all aspects of development and provision of bioinformatics services

8. Monitor the quality of bioinformatics outputs, such as secondary and tertiary analysis of next generation sequencing data, to ensure it meets the standards required for diagnostic services

9. Follow EGLH protocols and national professional guidelines

10. Communicate effectively within the bioinformatics team, with EGLH colleagues and service user.

  • • Degree in bioinformatics or an appropriate biological science or equivalent experience
  • • Postgraduate qualification in bioinformatics or an appropriate biological science or equivalent experience
  • • HCPC clinical scientist registration or is working towards registration

  • • Completion of Health Education England’s Scientist Training Programme in Clinical Bioinformatics Genomics or equivalent training programme

Experience

  • • Has developed bioinformatics tools and/or resources
  • • Has implemented bioinformatics tools and/or resources
  • • Has experience of performing specialist analysis and interpretation of genomic data
  • • Has experience of performing bioinformatics analysis of next generation sequencing data
  • • Has developed software using an object oriented language such as Python
  • • Has developed relational databases with tools such as MySQL/MariaDB
  • • Has experience of using tools such as R and pandas to perform programmatic statistical analysis of genomic data
  • • Has experience of effective, structured project management

  • • Has experience of clinical quality management systems
  • • Has used project management and team collaboration tools such as JIRA and Confluence
