Genomic Practitioner

We are seeking for an individual to join our growing service team supporting the operational delivery of diagnostic tests such as whole genome sequencing (WGS) across the Eastern regions. The Genomic Pracitioner will manage tasks in a timely, professional manner to ensure patients are offered diagnostic genetic testing.

Individuals who are dynamic, creative, flexible, and may be considering a career in genetic counselling, clinical research or project delivery may find this opportunity provides a key stepping stone to their career development. Applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences are welcomed.

To facilitate patient access to the Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) service, including arranging blood samples and coordinating return of relevant forms.


To support the delivery of Clinical Genetics Services to patients and families


To contribute to the completion of the 100,000 Genomes Project, manage requests for patient withdrawal, and re-consent patients who have turned 16 since joining the project.


To support the continued mainstreaming of genomic medicine, working with colleagues in other clinical specialties to form a network across the local area, supporting training for other members of staff as required.


To create, develop, and catalogue patient information resources.


The ideal candidate will have an interest in, and some prior knowledge of genomics but will have access to full training. You will be supported by clinical leadership within Clinical Genetics.

  • Educated to Degree level in a relevant subject (e.g. Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Psychology) supplemented by specialist training and/or experience OR Registered nurse (paediatric or adult) or midwife

  • Postgraduate qualification in genetics

Experience

  • Experience in a clinical / research/academic environment
  • Experience of working in a public facing role and/or caring environment

  • Experience of working within a clinical genetics service
  • Experience of recruiting, educating and monitoring patients within a clinical environment
  • Leadership experience

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the 100,000 Genomes Project and NHS plans for mainstreaming of genomics, and/or other demonstrable interest in genetics
  • An understanding of the principles of GCP and informed consent as they apply to clinical research
  • Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development

  • Knowledge of research design and methodologies
  • Knowledge of analytical processes
  • Strong foundation in genetics, inheritance, and rare inherited conditions at Degree level, demonstrated by relevant Undergraduate course modules
