Job overview
We are seeking to recruit an innovative and experienced Advanced Orthoptist for a fixed term / secondment period of 12 months at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
Addenbrooke’s Hospital is large teaching hospital and a research centre with strong affiliations with Cambridge University. It has a rich history of breaking the barriers of modern medicine and providing compassionate care for patients.
Main duties of the job
Be legally and professionally responsible for delivering highly skilled and comprehensive care in the management of complex Paediatric and Adult Orthoptics at Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust.
Provide high quality Orthoptic Service as an autonomous Practitioner.
Provide highly specialist role in delivering orthoptic assessment and care to Neurology, Paediatric Neurology, Stroke, Maxillo-facial, Endocrinology, Genetics, SCBU, Endocrine (including thyroid and diabetes) and Emergency Department.
Provide teaching, supervision and support to Orthoptic undergraduates and multidisciplinary staff.
Be responsible for undertaking and coordinating audits and CPD activities and actively participating in departmental research studies.
Required to ensure that the policies and procedures of the Department of Orthoptics and Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust are adhered to.
Support and mentor junior members of staff.
Deputise in the absence of the Head Orthoptist, managing other staff and assisting with the management of the Orthoptic Service when required.
Assist with the Orthoptic Secondary Screening Service.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Orthoptic qualification recognised for State Registration (Diploma or Degree)
- State registration with the HCPC
- Recognised clinical teaching qualification, e.g. PTLLS, CTLLS
Desirable criteria
- Masters Level qualification in a related area
- Medial exemptions for Orthoptists
- Leadership qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Advanced experience in all aspects of Orthoptics as well as assessment of children with special needs and genetic anomalies
- Visual field examination and interpretation
- Competence in Goldmann / Octopus and Humphrey visual fields
- Advanced experience of organisation, coordination and leading on clinical supervision and assessment of Orthoptic students, and other students / junior staff requiring Orthoptic education
- Experience of clinical audit
- Significant Experience of developing appropriate programmes of care for individual patients and/or clinical pathways
- Experience of presenting teaching and education in lecture style situations
- Experience of line management

- Experience of participation in departmental audit / research
