Practice Development Midwife

Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join our PD team until April 2025. Your main role will be to support our band 5 midwives in practice, ensuring a smooth transition from student to midwife and helping with clinical skills and competencies. 

Working closely with our band 5 midwives, you will play a key role in implementing the national preceptorship framework, offering clinical support and guidance and meeting with the band 5s regularly to ensure they feel well supported.

In addition to this, you will also help to deliver our training week and participate in key projects to improve and develop practice in the Rosie. This will involve engaging with relevant stakeholders including the multidisciplinary team and the main Trust education team.

We are a Trust that supports professional development and this position will give you the opportunity to implement new and innovative ways of working to support new midwives.

 

Main duties of the job

Some of the main duties of this job will include:

Supporting new band 5 midwives and ensuring that they are orientated to the Rosie

Creating an individualised plan for each midwife, recognising their strengths and where they may need further support

Maintaining visibility in the ward areas ( 3 days a week) to ensure that midwives are supported in practice

Working alongside midwives on a shift to support with clinical practice

Supporting with teaching clinical skills and supporting with assessments

Facilitating training sessions including obstetric emergencies or skills teaching and preceptorship day

Working closely with ward managers and matrons to ensure that we are supporting our new midwives

Helping to deliver on key projects such as the national preceptorship framework and core competency framework

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Midwife (Relevant experience is required)
  • Professional portfolio demonstrating evidence of relevant on-going professional development
  • Able to demonstrate on going learning
  • Diploma /Degree in Midwifery
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification
  • NIPE Course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate an expert working knowledge of midwifery in all areas of the maternity service in accordance with the NMC Rules and Standards
  • Evidence of relevant clinical updating
  • Robust understanding of Guidelines and Policies
Desirable criteria
  • Involvement with clinical audit and research
  • Use of computerised information system
  • Participation and contribution to local Regional/National maternity forums
  • Teaching experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Aware of current research and its impact on evidence based care
  • Conversant with NMC rules governing practice
  • Awareness of clinical governance
  • Knowledge of current reports/guidelines relating to maternity care and their implication
  • Good all round knowledge of patient surveys and satisfaction questionnaires

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Well-developed interpersonal and counselling skills
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Ability to present to wide and varied audience
  • Ability in perineal suturing, cannulation, I.V. drug additives and epidural management
  • Able to demonstrate contribution to changing practice
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable
  • Can demonstrate excellent working relationships and values with multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Enhanced maternal care skills such as arterial lines etc

  • The ability to understand and behave at all times, towards patients, visitors and colleagues according to the Trust values of safe, kind, excellent.
  • Ability to travel between the Trust and the community services, as required
  • Desire to teach on PROMPT and our MDT training week
  • Motivated to progress in own midwifery practice and continually develop
