An exciting opportunity has become available for a band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse within the Acute Oncology Service, based on the Cancer Assessment Unit (CAU). This role would suit those wishing to further develop their clinical assessment skills, and lead in the care of acutely unwell patients with cancer.
This is an exciting time to join the team and Directorate; the continued transformation of services means that more and more patients with cancer are being treated as outpatients. The Unit triages patients over the phones that are known to the Cancer Directorate. Patients are brought in for assessment and treatment of symptoms/side effects as required; patients are usually undergoing a range of treatments for cancer including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy, post-stem cell transplantation/CAR-T or receiving best supportive care.
When the CAU is closed the Acute Oncology Service peripatetic role supports the Cancer directorate and the Emergency Department, this includes weekends. You would be expected to work a range of shifts to cover this service.
You must be an enthusiastic nurse who will complement the highly skilled and motivated team in providing high quality care to patients. All candidates must be adaptable, able to thrive under pressure, a great team player, be able to empathise and to remain professional and positive during challenging situations.
Main duties of the job
To assist the ward manager in the overall running of the unit and assisting with the implementation of changes and support for the wider team. This will include, rota writing, QSIS investigation, appraisals etc.
To carry the 902 bleep for division and to hold the fire bleep as appropriate.
To administer chemotherapy both within and outside of the division.
To co-ordinate and effectively communicate with the wider multidisciplinary team to provide high quality, safe, kind and excellent care for our patients.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
Desirable criteria
- Diploma or equivalent or relevant postqualification Oncology or Haematology course.
- Relevant teaching and assessing / mentoring course or willingness to undertake.
- Advanced communication course.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post registration experience within an oncology/haematology setting.
- Recent experience of caring for patients with a cancer diagnosis.
- Mentoring and preceptorship.
- Managing an area in the absence of senior staff.
Desirable criteria
- Experience as team leader.
- Experience within an acute clinical area.
- Bleep holder experience.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge / good understanding of oncology and / or haematology disorders.
Desirable criteria
- Advanced Assessment Skills and knowledge.
- Experience of triage or acute care.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Effective communication skills.

- Venepuncture and Cannulation.
- CVAD competent.
- Oral and IV drug administration.
