Addenbrooke’s Hospital are seeking to add to their team of 16 optometrists and three ECLO’s to support the growing, thriving ophthalmology department. You will be a confident, experienced optometrist who is keen to learn new skills and get stuck into the fascinating, challenging and ultimately rewarding role that is an Addenbrooke’s Optometrist.
Most of the optometry team are employed on a part time basis so those with other work or personal commitments are very welcome. You should be prepared to commit to at least 15 hours per week. Lack of previous hospital experience should not deter you to apply if you feel you meet the other requirements for the job. Main duties of the job
Deliver a range of clinical services to the highest standards
Provide safe and effective referral triage and clinical adviceAssist in the teaching and training of staff and community partners

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- B.Sc.(Hons) Optometry degree
- General Optical Council registration
- College of Optometrists’ higher qualification in area of clinical specialism (Prof Cert, Higher Cert or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- Additional degree (Masters/PHD)
- Member of College of Optometrists
- Independent prescribing qualification (Dip.IP)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant post-qualification optometry experience with exposure to a wide range of ophthalmic conditions
- Experience teaching and providing clinical supervision
- Experience working with adult and paediatric patients who are visually impaired & patients with learning disabilities
Desirable criteria
- Experience working in hospital optometry
- Experience with referral triage
- Experiencing with line management
- Experiencing within research or audit
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of visual assessment and investigation techniques used in general and specialist optometry services
- Detailed understanding of the management of hospital optometry patients including refractive prescribing and low vision management
- Broad understanding of the management of specialist optometry patients such as macular disease, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of ocular therapeutics
- Working knowledge of community optometry pathways
Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to independently assess and make clinical decisions, recognising limitations of own abilities
- Ability to directly supervise, support and develop clinical staff
- Ability to communicate complex clinical information in a range of situations including where there may be barriers to understanding
- Ability to convey bad news in a sensitive manner
- Ability to work independently and use initiative
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Advanced written communication skills for writing clinical case notes and reports
- Good attention to detail
- Fine motor skills e.g. handling of diagnostic lenses
- Ability to sensitively manage staff with respect to their emotional well being
- IT skills –use of Word, Excel. Ability to adapt to using electronic patient records
