Specialist Orthoptist – Medical Retina

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and enthusiastic orthoptist to carryout specialist  orthoptic and medical retina clinics.

 

This post is suitable for orthoptists who would like to specialise in medical retinal conditions and happy to carry out intravitreal injections. 

 

You will not require any previous experience, as full training will be provided in this specialised role to the successful applicant. We also provide excellent career progression and mentoring support.

 

Addenbrooke’s Hospital is a large teaching hospital and a research centre with strong affiliations with Cambridge University. It has a rich history of breaking the barriers of modern medicine and providing compassionate care for the patients.

Main duties of the job

Orthoptics

To be autonomously responsible for the diagnosis, management and treatment of patients presenting to the Orthoptic department and formulate relevant discharge plans and make appropriate onward referral

 

Provide timely paediatric and adult Orthoptic services at Addenbrooke’s NHS Trust and off-site community services including specialist Orthoptic services

 

Participate in extended orthoptic clinical roles

 

Medical Retina

The orthoptist will also have an extended role in the medical retina clinic and will be performing intra-vitreal injections on patients with  age related macular degeneration and diabetic  retinopathy  in a consultant led clinic .  The injections would be carried out on  a pre-determined group of patients following a competency – based programme of training

The post holder will work closely with the interdisciplinary team and develop practice to ensure that quality standards are met

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or Degree level qualification
  • Orthoptic degree level qualification
  • State registration with the HCPC
  • Evidence of ongoing commitment to Continuous Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised clinical teaching qualification
  • Mentor qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Good level clinical experience within ophthalmology Orthoptic teams
  • Experience working under own initiative
  • Experience in delivering evidence based practice
  • Experience of teaching others
  • Ability to work under pressure
Desirable criteria
  • Experience conducting audit
  • Experience in intravitreal injections or extended role

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understand the basic underlying pathology in the main retinal conditions (AMD, diabetic retinopathy and vein occlusion)
  • Knowledge of current treatment options and management of the main retinal conditions
  • Knowledge of the signs and symptoms of the main retinal conditions
  • Understand the difficulties visually impaired patients face and to know when to refer to support services
  • Awareness of the requirement to work within a budget
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate an understanding of clinical governance

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients and co-workers (written, verbally and non-verbally)
  • Awareness of visually impaired patients’ needs and ability to adjust communication and examination techniques accordingly
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and autonomously
  • To be flexible to meet service needs
  • Demonstrates evidence of ability to educate others
  • Able and willing to undertake ophthalmic training/ophthalmic course
  • Ability to prioritise workload of self and junior colleagues
Desirable criteria
  • Computing skills: word-processing, spread sheet and presentation packages
