Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and dynamic band 5 Assistant Psychologist to join our team to support the delivery of neuropsychological rehabilitation within the Cambridgeshire Integrated Stroke Early Supported Discharge (ESD) and Community Neuro Rehab Service. 

You will be working across a range of settings, including seeing patients in their own homes, at outpatient clinics and an inpatient rehabilitation centre at Brookfields Hospital in Cambridge. This post involves community working and as such there will an expectation to travel.

This post will be based in the South of the county with your base being either Brookfields Hospital or Hinchingbrooke Hospital however there may be times where you are expected to cover further across the county.

This is 12-month fixed term contract, 0.8 FTE (4 days a week).

Main duties of the job

To support the delivery of neuropsychological care to stroke & other brain injury survivors experiencing cognitive, emotional and behavioural difficulties as a result of their injury. This role is part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) comprised of a team of Clinical Psychologists specialising in Neuropsychology, Neuro Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Assistants, Nurses and other healthcare staff.

The role involves providing neuropsychological assessment and interventions under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist. You will have opportunities to work closely with other multidisciplinary teams in the community, primary care, the acute neuro rehab team, and other external agencies.

Staff personal and professional development is viewed as highly important, and staff have the opportunity to receive training through an in-house in-service training programme as well as being supported to undertake a blended competency package to help you develop within your profession and role. An intensive Trust and Local induction will be provided.

The ideal candidate will be flexible and adaptable to support service delivery across the organisation. The post holder must have access to a personal car for independent travel across the work locality. The successful candidate will work in an agile manner using virtual consultation to manage their caseload of patients, having access to a smart phone and laptop to support this.

  • To support and enhance the professional psychological care of clients of the Integrated Stroke ESD and Community Neuro Rehabilitation Service across inpatient and community settings. 
  • To provide psychological assessment and neurophsychological interventions under the supervision of a qualified psychologist. Working independently according to a plan agreed with a qualified psychologist and within the overall framework of the team's policies and procedures. 
  • To assist in clinically related administration, conducting audits, collection of data and statistics, development of audit and/or research projects and teaching. 
  • To attend psychology supervision on a weekly basis and engage in CPD as agreed with supervisor and professional manager. 

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • An upper second class honours degree or higher in psychology.
  • Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society
Desirable criteria
  • Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Some experience of working with people with mental health problems and/or other disabilities in a health or social services setting.
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Some experience of conducting psychological assessments (neuropsychological/ standardised assessments).
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of an assistant psychologist post or equivalent.
  • Previous experience of working with people with neurological conditions
  • Lived experience of mental health.

Skills & Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive, and in delivering sensitive information.
  • Able to accept and use supervision appropriately and effectively including reflection.
  • Interpersonally calm and able to diffuse difficult, volatile situations.
  • An ability to work effectively with the Multidisciplinary team while maintaining boundaries.
  • An ability to work independently (planning own workload), reliably and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals.
  • Good organisational skills including time management but the ability to be flexible.
  • Experience using computers for databases or data analysis, especially SPSS for windows & Excel.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering evidence based psychologically informed interventions.
  • Experience of conducting service evaluation/audit / research.
  • Experience of working directly with people with neurological conditions.
  • Experience of working with carers.

Knowledge & Understanding

Essential criteria
  • Some knowledge of the theory behind neuropsychological assessment and rehabilitation
  • An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to people with neurological conditions.
  • Some knowledge of behavioural management advice
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people living with long term neurological conditions, including the issues of emotional adjustment.
  • Some knowledge of models regarding emotional adjustment to long term conditions.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of the psychological issues relevant to existential issues
  • Knowledge of Mindfulness and Compassion Focused Therapy

Physical Requirements

Essential criteria
  • Must have access to a personal car and the ability to drive independently around the locality, due to the radius covered and lack of public transport in some area
