PMHJRC - Advanced Mental Health Practitioner

As an Advanced Mental Health Practitioner working in the Police Mental Health Joint Response Car (PMHJRC) you will work alongside Cambridgeshire Constabulary (CC) Officers to provide an immediate response to people in the community who are experiencing a mental health crisis. 

Working  3pm – Midnight (Sun – Thurs) and 4pm – 2am (Fri – Sat) (please note these could be subject to change), the PMHJRC responds to 999 calls made to the Police, that have been identified as having a primary mental health need.  The Advanced MH Practitioner will carry out a brief triage to ascertain whether a person can safely remain at home to avoid unnecessary attendance at acute hospitals, offer safety planning, sign posting and referrals into MH services if needed.  They will also support officers in making decisions around the use of S.136 .

Successful candidate will work closely with Cambridgeshire constabulary to respond to 999 calls from, or concerning people in a mental health crisis.

The role of the Advanced Mental Health Practitioner will be to triage mental health presentations, need and risk and make collaborative plans for appropriate follow up care as appropriate. 

Please note - the successful candidate will undergo police vetting as part of the employment checks.

  1. To take the lead in assessing patient’s mental state and risk and determining whether the patient is safe to be managed in the community.
  2. To take the lead in initiating any appropriate plans for ongoing care.
  3. To be a clinical expert and provide a patient focus for improving the patient experience.
  4. To work closely with the operational and professional leads in developing the service.
  5. The post holder may be required to work with FRS occasionally when the PMHJRC roster does not require them to cover the PMHJRC.
  6. Offering advice, support and guidance to CC officers on scene at mental health jobs.
  7. To liaise with other health and social care providers as appropriate and have good knowledge of local mental health pathways and services, including external agencies.
  8. To have sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.
  9. The post holder will work with FRS on occasion when the MA unit roster does not require them to cover MA.

Please note for this role you will be required to travel independently around the county meeting strict time deadlines. You will need to hold a full UK driving licence* and have use of a vehicle. You cannot use public transport for this role as this is not a reliable form of transport and will not allow you to meet service needs. Skills and Abilities

  • Assessing, formulating and working with people presenting in a heightened state of distress.
  • Communicating (oral and written) complex and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families and carers and to other professionals working both within and outside of CPFT.

  • Teaching / training of clinical staff.

Knowledge & Understanding

  • Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA)
  • Able to demonstrate initiative and be proactive in organising the most suitable pathway of care.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Good knowledge of Trust services and voluntary sector services within CPFTs catchment area.
