We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Clinical Psychologist to join our Integrated Stroke Early Supported Discharge and Community Neuro Rehab Service.
You will be responsible for a clinical caseload across Cambridgeshire, where you will deliver evidence-based specialist Psychology programmes to support patients with complex needs. You will work collaboratively with a team of professionals, including Psychology Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist Nurses, and Neuro Rehab Assistants.
This exciting opportunity involves working in different settings, including patient’s homes, wards, and using virtual consultations to manage your caseload.
This is a countywide service, and the successful candidates base will be dependent on which location is nearest to home. There may be times when there is a requirement to provide clinical cover across the county which would require travel.

Main duties of the job
To provide specialist psychology for the Stroke Early Supported Discharge and Community Neuro Rehabilitation Service for patients who have had a stroke or TBI, using evidence-based practice to ensure clinical care is effective and appropriate to promote independence and ensure patients receive the appropriate care. The appointed candidate will undertake holistic specialist assessment using advanced, specialist clinical reasoning skills. They will be professionally and legally accountable for their own and delegated work.
The appointed candidate will ensure that accurate and timely written records are kept, report any issues and will be responsible for initiating and co-ordinating case conferences, when indicated, to ensure integrated care and planning. They will provide specialist Psychological (neurological) advice to all members of the multi-disciplinary team, service users and others of changes involving current care plans, patients progress and other relevant matters.
The appointed person will work within Trust and HCPC guidelines, demonstrating a good working knowledge of national and local standards in line with legal and operational requirements, use own professional judgement, implement best practice/legislation.

Please note for this role you will be required to travel independently around the county meeting strict time deadlines. You will need to hold a full UK driving licence* and have use of a vehicle. You cannot use public transport for this role as this is not a reliable form of transport and will not allow you to meet service needs. - To take a key leadership role in the Clinical Psychology Service for Stroke and TBI in conjunction with other senior clinicians and to be part of the leadership group for the Integrated Stroke and Community Neuro Rehabilitation Service.
- To ensure that the Service works collaboratively with internal and external services to provide seamless care for patients with physical health problems with associated psychological needs including screening for anxiety and depression
- To work with Clinical Psychology across the team to develop a programme of training and development for all staff to improve skills in working with common post stroke mood and cognitive symptoms. In addition to supervision professionals delivering level 2 assessment and intervention.
- To provide highly specialist psychological assessments of clients referred to the Service based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex psychological data.
- To work across different care environments including in/outpatient, residential care, and domestic settings, working according to the agreed stepped care procedures
- Manage referrals into the service, ensuring prompt assessment and expert stroke and TBI advice.
- With the support of the Professional Lead Psychologist for Older People and Adult Community (OPAC) directorate to develop and provide innovative services to meet the psychological needs of stroke and TBI patients in accordance with evidence–based practice.

Person specification
Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, or a BPS Statement of Equivalence.
- Registration with Health Care Professions Council as a clinical psychologist.
- Undertaken training in the supervision of trainee clinical psychologists.
Desirable criteria
- Chartered Clinical Psychologist
- Undertaken post-doctoral training in one or more relevant additional specialised areas of psychological practice.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of providing highly specialised and comprehensive administration and interpretation of neuropsychological assessments and interventions for stroke survivors and patients with a long term neurological condition
- Experience of specialist consultation for staff to support rehabilitation offered in the home environment.
- Experience of teaching, training and professional and clinical supervision including at least three trainee clinical psychologists.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of representing psychology within the context of multi-disciplinary care. Experience of leadership in a clinical context
Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
- Proficient in complex methods of psychological assessment, formulation, intervention, and management, requiring advanced analytical and judgment skills.
- Skilled in individual and group therapy, as well as program planning.
- Capable of planning and organising caseloads effectively.
Desirable criteria
- Well-developed knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies for Stroke survivors andpatients with a long term neurological condition.
- Knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialised psychological therapies and assessment methodologies.
Knowledge and Understanding
Essential criteria
- Able to contain and work with high levels of distress from clients and /or organisational stresses maintaining calm with the ability to defuse difficult or volatile situations.
- Able to tolerate ambiguity and to take decisions in situations of incomplete information.
- Ability to exercise appropriate levels of self-care and to monitor own state, recognising when it is necessary to take active steps to maintain fitness to practice.
Other
Essential criteria
- Ability to identify, provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations and severely challenging behaviours.
- Able to tolerate prolonged periods of sitting.
- Must have access to a personal car and the ability to drive independently around the locality, due to the radius covered and lack of public transport in some area
