Main duties of the job
- To proactively lead the paediatric nursing team to ensure the delivery of high quality and clinically effective patient care.
- To advise on, and be actively involved in, the management and ongoing development of paediatric services within the Emergency Department.
- To support and assist in the professional development of all staff with regards to high quality paediatric care and child safeguarding issues.
- To communicate effectively and co-ordinate multidisciplinary work within agreed timeframes

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate paediatric care within agreed guidelines and pathways.
- Ensure patient safety at all times and that patient’s and relative’s needs are met in a courteous, helpful, and compassionate manner.
- Act as clinical leader and role model, sharing expertise with colleagues.
- Deliver high quality and evidence-based nursing care, and ensure that colleagues maintain the same through ongoing training and audit.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of patient care, and ensure that colleagues maintain the same.
- Promote effective relationships between the multidisciplinary team, both within the immediate clinical environment and across the wider Trust.
- Ensure that any risks to effective patient care are raised through the appropriate channels.
Person specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Children’s Nurse, at least 5 years post qualification
- Recognised mentorship qualification
- PILS
- Trained to Level 3 Paediatric Safeguarding
Desirable criteria
- Registered General Nurse or equivalent allied health professional
- Recognised teaching qualification
- APLS
- TNCC
- HMIMMS
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience as a Registered Children’s Nurse, at least AFC Band 6 level
- Minimum 6-months Emergency Department experience
- Experience with management of junior staff
Desirable criteria
- Experience with budgetary control
- Experience of recruitment and selection processes
- Experience of effective complaints management
- Experience of effective incident investigations
Applicant requirements
You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
