Job overview

The post involves working with service users as part of the OPD Fens services located within a High Secure male prison setting. Tasks may involve you working outside of the Fens services including the residential wings, workshops, the health care centre and, at times, may involve attending prisoners who are temporarily based in Health Care, Segregation Unit, the Bridge or the Close Supervision Unit.

The post holder will provide specialist mental health knowledge, advice, consultation, and a range of clinically based interventions, ensuring that assessments, treatments, and ongoing care as required is delivered within the prison environment. 

The post holder will develop and deliver specialist clinics that address the holistic needs of this population focussed on specialist needs related to trauma, personality difficulties and comorbid mental health conditions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide specialist knowledge and interventions for the offenders within PD pathway (OPDP) using high quality, evidence-based specialist assessments and interventions. To ensure the provision of specialist advice, consultation, liaison, and education to professionals who work within and in conjunction with the OPDP Fens services.

You will contribute to the ongoing review, development, and delivery of Mental Health training and education to other staff. To work jointly with staff from a variety of other services.

To liaise and consult with the Fens Services Consultant Psychiatrist, the NHFT Psychiatrist, the primary health care team, and secondary MH teams within the prison.

To provide specialist advice and consultation regarding the management of moderate and severe MH conditions, supporting referrals to specialist NHS services where appropriate.

  1. treatment and discharge of Service Users, and manage and maintain a caseload in line with current standards of nurse therapist practice and consistent with agreed team approaches which are aligned to the agreed theoretical model used underpinning the clinical work of the OPDP services.
  1. To communicate the results of assessment and interventions to other members of the multidisciplinary team including non-clinical staff using the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills.
  1. To communicate, using the highest level of interpersonal and communication skills, the results of this clinical work to the prisoner who may be hostile and antagonistic to receiving this information.
  1. To develop plans for the formal nursing interventions and/or management of a Service User’s mental health and behavioural problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of these problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy, across the full range of care settings.
  1. To provide specialist nursing advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to the management of Service Users’ symptoms and treatment.
  1. To ensure that all members of the clinical team have access to the understanding of the Service User from a nursing perspective, through the provision of advice and consultation and the dissemination of nursing research and theory.
  1. To use highly specialist nursing knowledge and expertise to undertake ongoing risk assessment and risk management for individual prisoners and to provide advice, and risk management in line with the OPDP service specification and with Trust and inter-agency policies and procedures.
  1. To work in partnership with other disciplines to help to establish and maintain trans-disciplinary team working. 
  1. To take a leading role within the trans-disciplinary team meetings providing direct input to those meetings and communicating information on assessments, formulations and interventions provided by other staff within The Fens services.
  1. To be responsible for keeping up to date with research related to the pharmacological interventions for people with complex mental health problems. To maintain a policy for the triage of medication requests from all Service Users in Fens services and liaising across psychiatry and other NHFT services .
  1. To ensure the effective running of appropriate systems to enable the Service Users in Fens services have equal opportunities to access physical health care via the staff of the Healthcare Centre as any other prisoner within HMP Whitemoor.
  1. To monitor and evaluate progress of clients during both uni- and trans-disciplinary interventions and to provide appropriate reports as and when required. To present these reports in a way that does justice to the complexity of the problems described, but that are understandable to the recipients of the reports, including the Service Users and referrers.
  1. To, where appropriate, act as care coordinator, ensuring the provision of a care package appropriate for the Service Users needs, coordinating the work of others involved with care, tasking responsibility for arranging CPA reviews as required and communicating effectively with the Service User and all others involved in the network of care, and to monitor progress during the course of trans-disciplinary interventions.
  1. To contribute to Prison Service process of reviews of Fens service users, providing written or verbal reports as appropriate to the specific reviews. Such reviews include those that relate to suicidal behaviour (ACCT reviews), security reviews (category A reports) and parole (SPRE) reviews as required.
  1. To contribute to the wider OPDP service by sharing information with the other sites and those progression services that will provide for these service users once they have left the high secure service.

Education/Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Registered Mental Nurse/RN (Mental Health)
  • • Relevant post – basic qualification(s) with a Professional portfolio to evidence Clinical therapy qualification such as CBT/Sensorimotor psychotherapy
Desirable criteria
  • • Graduate at Masters level or studying towards this level
  • • Relevant Supervision qualification
  • • Relevant Management qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Substantial post registration experience in senior nursing positions, to include significant leadership functions.
  • • Experience of managing a nursing service.
  • • Change management experience.
  • • Organisational development experience.
  • • Evidence of applying research to advance practice.
  • • Experience of working in secure / forensic conditions
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching experience across NHS/College settings.
  • • Experience of practice development by extensive experience of supervision and teaching.
  • • Experience of influencing the advancement of mental health care.
  • • Currently engaged in significant clinical work with people with personality disorder at an advanced level of practice and can demonstrate a high degree of professional autonomy in this area.
